Lobby Host

June 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Great opportunity. If you have customer & team-work experience with fast food/first-jobs/part-time jobs/etc. then this will be really easy to do. For my experience, I just brought all my customer-service attitudes and learned to work with their administrative structures. All you need to learn (technically) is Outlook. The rest is covered in training, low-stress and very manageable.

What I wish was different

Nothing at the moment, I DO wish that we could officially be allowed to navigate school websites through our work computers. However, I realize that our purpose is for customer service and security, thus unapproved websites are obviously unapproved. That said, I still find time to sneak in my own "online errands" for lack of better term. That is to say, on really slow days I'm likely to be working on my own stuff just because (as far as I can tell), my computer isn't live-monitored or anything like that.

Advice

You may get bored quickly, especially if you're used to being on the go/staying busy for a whole 8 hours. Make sure you have something to work on, a book, a planner, something quiet that doesn't emit noise to occupy your time IF you have nothing else to do.

Debt & Structured Finance Intern

June - August 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The debt & structured finance department at CBRE was a great experience. I learned a lot about the commercial real estate industry and particularly about how the multi-million dollar deals are accomplished. I was exposed to a variety of new operations, many of which are beneficial to have entering the job market. Some skills I learned included underwriting, balancing spreadsheets, as well as how to interact with clients and loan providers to satisfy the needs of both parties.

What I wish was different

I have no complaints about my experience at CBRE and overall enjoyed my time with my team. At CBRE, the teams are fairly isolated and rarely interact with one another, as each team is accountable for their clients and work on commissions. I wish I would have had the opportunity to interact with different departments more to gain a deeper insight into the commercial real estate industry as a whole.

Advice

The internship is intense and demanding of your time and effort. You get what you put into the experience, so come to work everyday ready to give it your all for the time that you are on the clock. Do not forget to go around and introduce yourself to the people within your department; networking is crucial within the commercial real estate world and knowing more people will serve you with a huge advantage.
