Caterpillar Financial

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Pontiac, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed how thoroughly I was taken through what responsibilities a welding engineer has outside of what school teaches.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed communicating with other engineers more to better grasp the work flow as a whole.

Advice

I would say make your internship your own. Ask questions, ask to talk and work with people you are interested in. Don't be idle.

Finance Intern

June - July 2021 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I love how the workers of CAT were so welcoming. The culture and environment is so rich with engagement, knowledge, and friendships. I could never have thanked CAT enough for the opportunity to work there.

What I wish was different

Only thing I wish could have been different is actually being in Nashville for the whole time. My experience was virtual, but we did get to regale to Nashville the last week of the internship.

Advice

Never be afraid to network and ask for help. Everyone is there to help you wether it’s on your project or not.

Process Automation Intern

May - July 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

Interns in Information Services were given meaningful and useful projects to complete during the duration of the program. The company offered thorough on-boarding and applicable resources for completing projects. The mentoring from full-time employees was superb as I never felt afraid or intimidated to reach out for help. Interns in IS also participated in team meetings and were asked to contribute. At the end of the program, interns were given the chance to present their projects in the company's auditorium to company executives. Although challenging, the team I worked with was very helpful in assisting with my presentation. It was a useful learning experience and interns were treated like normal employees. There were also a plethora of developmental experiences outside of daily work such as volunteering and social outings with Network Resource Groups. The program was a great learning experience and a great financial opportunity over the summer as the internship compensation was generous, especially since the company provided housing and free parking to interns. The internship was also in a great location as Nashville is a booming city with many amenities. You'll also have the opportunity to socialize with the other interns in the program and develop friendships.

What I wish was different

More focus on the IS interns. Internship was mainly made for Finance professionals. Some of the technologies and practices used within the company were somewhat outdated and many software packages and tools were open-source (free). I wish the company would invest more in their IS department for more updated tools and software applications.

Advice

Give every problem/task your best effort, but don't be afraid to reach out for help.
