Special Education Paraeducator

What I liked

The realization that I can be effective in the life of a child who has special needs. I also realized the connection between the family and the school and the important impact the connection has.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more help in the classroom. There is a paraeducator shortage in the school district preschool program across the board. And the students cannot be serviced according to their IEP's without proper help.

Advice

Don't be afraid to do hard things. I loved working with these children. They are in a behavioral support class for a reason and the help you can provide them can help them go from a restrictive environment to a less restrictive environment. Also, look for the everyday good moments when working with young children. Sometimes it takes a while for them to understand yet when they do it is so rewarding.
