Camp Warwick

Wilderness Camp and Assistant Adventure Camp Director

June - August 2019 • Warwick, NY

What I liked

I liked being able to have an impact on the children and people with severe disabilities that came throughout summer camp. We also had a lot of fun activities and cool events that we held, along with blending in ways of telling the Bible to them.

What I wish was different

There are a few things that I really wish we had for this camp. First, the counselors and our head director were not enthusiastic about their position and work that they were doing. Second, we did not have enough staff on board. During Wilderness Camp, I spent half of the time not having another counselor helping me, leaving me alone trying to run an entire section of camp. We also had times where the assistant In Camp director needed to work as a counselor because of being understaffed.

Advice

For any job that you're working with children for more than a couple hours, you'll learn a lot of patience and perseverance. I would say that my experience working at this camp was very challenging due to being understaffed, but through that, I learned how to develop leadership skills that have allowed me to understand when to stand up and take initiative.
