Head of Arts and Crafts

June - August 2019 • Groveland, CA

What I liked

it was a wonderful, fun community! working at a summer camp is something most people only really get to do during summers during college and I think it is the best thing I could possibly imagine doing with my summers.

What I wish was different

It is difficult to transition from a place like Oberlin to a space with other young people who think very differently. especially working at a Jewish summer camp where Israel is a big topic of conversation.

Advice

Allow yourself to have fun with your summers. there is so much pressure to find an internship and advance your career. You can learn so much from working at a summer camp and also actually catch a much-needed break after school.

Unit Supervisor

May - August 2018 • Groveland, CA

What I liked

Working with kids, supervising staff, exploring how an outdoor education/residential camp runs behind the scenes.

What I wish was different

I wish my job was seen as more prestigious and important. Working at a summer camp gives you extensive experience that other jobs cannot - at age 21 I was supervising 15 counselors, in charge of 60 campers, and working directly with adults for whom this is a full time career. I was gaining valuable skills for myself, rather than doing busy work for someone else.

Advice

Work at a summer camp at least one summer! It is so fun, an amazing and supportive community, and you learn so much about yourself and working with others.
