Camp Takodah

Cabin Leader

June - July 2023 • Richmond, NH

What I liked

I loved working on a small, close knit staff where everyone cared about each other and the campers that we were working with. I also loved the connection to the mission and core values of the Y. I also liked the welcoming atmosphere, particularly for new staff who had not been to camp before.

What I wish was different

I enjoyed the pace of camp but it is important to take care of yourself. I wish that I had relaxed more on my days off. At the end of the summer it can be challenging to maintain the same level of effort that I had at the beginning.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help! Everyone is willing to lend a hand and do what they can to support you.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2023 • Richmond, NH

What I liked

Spending a summer as a camp counselor is a great way to spend a summer; spending a summer at Takodah was the BEST way to spend my summer. Aside from treating its staff incredibly, having great facilities, and providing plenty of opportunities for fun, Takodah is full of some of the best people you will meet. I made best friends with people I spent my summer with and felt close to just about everyone else I worked alongside.

What I wish was different

I wish it never ended. Truthfully, it can be a tiring job. That is incredibly rewarding, but be ready to move a lot and spend a lot of time with kids.

Advice

I'm not sure I'll ever find a similar experience again. Take advantage while you have free summers.

I loved getting to help shape the kids' summers to be as amazing as possible for them: to give them opportunities to have the excitement of new experiences, the joy of making new friends, and the confidence of better discovering themselves.

What I wish was different

It was really amazing the way it was, I only wish I had been a little more rested and could give more energy at times.

The opportunity helped me practise my EMT skills while getting to work primarily with children. Everyone was friendly and helpful to work with.

What I wish was different

There is not anything I would change that was the responsibility of Camp Takodah.

What I liked

I loved working alongside young adults my own age with children to ensure that they had an amazing summer experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I wouldn't change a thing.

Advice

Have patience! Working with young teenagers can be taxing on your mental health but just remember to take a deep breath and try to understand where they are coming from.

Summer Camp Councelor

July - August 2018 • Winchester, NH

What I liked

I absolutely loved being able to learn what it’s like to be a councelor from the ground up, as it was my first time ever going to a summer camp in general. Everyone was so friendly and happy to be there, and I couldn’t be done it without their support and lessons!

What I wish was different

While I made some learning mistakes there from it being my first time, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I appreciate everything I did and learned there.

Advice

Have a growth mindset. Always have the motivation to learn and grow with not only your fellow staff, but also with the kids, and that goes for any career and position.
