What I liked

I got the opportunity to get hands-on experience that I would never get in a classroom. I learned so much about autism in its many forms, and how to help people with a variety of ability levels. Working at Camp Lakey Gap was the single most rewarding job I have ever been in.

What I wish was different

The food and the living situation was awful. In the staff cabin, pests were common, everything smelled bad, and we didn't have AC. The food routinely gave the staff GI distress, to put it nicely. The hours were long (we worked 12 hour days), and when we got off of work, there was always still more to be done; we got paid very little for the amount of work we were being asked to do.

Advice

This job requires a lot of hard work and determination. If you are working there for any other reason than to help people on the autism spectrum get the care they need, you are in the wrong place. You will be tested. Some of the campers have violent or otherwise disturbing behaviors, so be prepared for that. Also, bring an electric fan, a power strip, Tums, a mattress topper, and plenty of caffeine; you'll be glad you did.
