Advice

You get to yourself and be accepted by every staff member and camper. You learn to be empathetic and a compassionate person after this experience. At the end instead of thinking that you are impacting the lives of the campers you will see that they are the ones who impact your life the most. Also, you will meet amazing staff that come from around the world to work in this amazing place.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Boulder Creek, CA

What I liked

I absolutely fell in love with taking care of Developmentally disabled people. They have the biggest hearts and provide so much happiness to all around them.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known exactly what I was going to be providing for the campers. I felt a little blind-sided when I arrived and was thrown into the work before any introduction.

Advice

This was the most wonderful experience I've ever had. But it was much harder work than I had expected. I would advise that you ask exactly what your role will be while being interviewed.

Camp Counselor

May - October 2016 • Boulder Creek, CA

What I liked

I loved the campers that I worked with. I gained a world of experience that put me further ahead in my career path. It was an eye opening experience and one I will never forget.

What I wish was different

Actually, I don't think there really needs to he anything different as far as the job itself. The only thing that I wished was different, would have been for it to not he so hot outside!!!!! 😁

Advice

Go in with zero expectations. Having g expectations could hinder you in this job because you actually don't know the extent of what you might be dealing with. Have patience, make connections, bond with your campers, and build trust within your team.

Nursing Assistant

May - August 2018 • Boulder Creek, CA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work with the special needs population. It was a great chance to expand my career interests in the field of nursing and discover a new passion. It was also a beautiful setting in the Santa Cruz mountains, I was so lucky to live there for the entirety of the summer .

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed a more generous pay rate but in the end I understand it is a non-profit organization and that housing and meals were provided at no cost to me all summer.

Advice

Come prepared to work very long days and pour all of your energy into this position. It is physically and emotionally demanding work but extremely rewarding.
