Camp Champions

Summer Camp counselor

May - July 2023 • Marble Falls, TX

What I liked

I loved the community, meeting the international counselors, and absolutely loving on all of the kids and making a lasting impact on their lives. Providing such a fun, caring environment and unforgettable memories for not only the campers, but me as well.

What I wish was different

Better communication between leadership and the counselors.

Advice

All of the campers just want to have fun and make memories, if you can supply and encourage that environment, the children will love you. Venting up and not out will solve so many communication issues.

Art Instructor

June - August 2018 • West Allis, WI

What I liked

I liked that this was an opportunity to get my foot in the door for my career in Early Childhood education. I loved the participants of the camp and getting to know each of them individually.

What I wish was different

I wish the camp ran longer. I needed one more week with the kids!

Advice

Don't be afraid to jump right in. I took on an Instructor role with no experience in the camp. This was the best decision ever because I was confident and made an impact.

Division Leader

May - August 2019 • Marble Falls, TX

What I liked

I was a supervisor/manager to counselors at a summer camp. I also oversaw their 60 campers at a time. I have been a counselor in the past, so I was able to be very empathetic and tend to each individual's needs as I saw fit. I liked how rewarding the experience was and how much the camp values positive reinforcement. This camp keeps people grounded. Without social pressures of cute wardrobes, social media, parties, each person is able to delve deep into friendships and connections with others. It truly reminds people what their values and priorities are or should be.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to focus on a given task. I had so many responsibilities that I was really spread thin. I would have rather had the space to give more focus and energy into each task at hand to ensure quality results.

Advice

You are totally immersed in the summer camp experience and your job is to instill pride, confidence, and support in your campers (or whatever you think the camper needs). There is a clear opportunity here to completely change a kid's life for the better. There are only so many hours in the day, so seize every chance you can, because that is the whole reason why we work at camp!

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Marble Falls, TX

What I liked

I liked being around kids and growing as a person alongside my family of other counselors. Together we learned the value of hard work, teamwork, and how to keep a smile on your face regardless of what else was going on. We learned how to be role models for kids in a place without technology, and how to encourage and develop face-to-face interaction. We all became a family throughout the summer, learning and growing together.

What I wish was different

While I would do this job for no pay, I wish the pay had been higher than $200/week. We're basically working around the clock, which is way more hours, and much busier hours, than any other job I've heard of.

Advice

Do it! Camp is an incredible experience that you can only do right now in your life. I never went to camp as a kid, but by the end of my first summer as a counselor, it was my new home with a new family who I loved dearly and wish I didn't have to leave.

Media Agent

What I liked

I really enjoyed my ability to think outside the box. I was given brief instructions but had the ability to really come up with my own ideas. I was always given a large amount of support from my peers.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be yourself. Don't be shy, really let yourself flow and be open to new experiences and relationships. Excellent chance to network youself.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Marble Falls, TX

What I liked

Great co-workers and work environment. This is a job that often didn't feel like a job; I got to have fun with kids all summer, play games, and just be crazy and goofy. I also made some amazing friends with other counselors from around the world thanks to this job.

What I wish was different

I do wish it had paid better. Starting pay was $200 a week, and even though room and board are all provided, I still think that staff members should be paid more, especially considering how much the campers are paying to attend.

Advice

This is not the job for everyone. Yes, it was load of fun, but it was also the most exhausting job I have ever had, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. You are the caregiver of ten energetic campers, you work long days in the hot sun, and need to be on your A-game at all times. It's tough. That being said, I would do it again in a heartbeat. This job was incredibly rewarding and eye-opening for me, and I feel like I actually made a difference in others' lives this summer. That's not something I could say with my past jobs. Just make sure you are 100% committed to devoting all of your time and energy to the campers, because this summer is all about them and making sure they are having the time of their lives.
