Restaurant Shift Leader

July 2016 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I appreciate the chance to take a break from some of the more serious career path jobs. This job also allowed me to get a better understanding of the way in which businesses work. As well as how to be a good leader, and to teach others to be strong employees.

What I wish was different

I think that I tend to take every job as a serious job, I however, wish I had taken a step back, and instead enjoyed the break from the more serious things that I have going on with school, and a career path.

Advice

I think that as a college student working towards perhaps, a very different career it is important to remember that this is just a job, and one that is fun, rather than a serious career path. However, I suggest that you don't treat this job, or any as just a job. Every job, even one that isn't within your future career path is a way to learn more, and to train to be a better employee, coworker, and provider. Every job should be considered a stepping stone, you never know what connections your employer, or manager has with outside people.

shift manager

May - August 2018 • Bend, OR

What I liked

I liked the free shift meals and that I got lots of hours. I was able to save up a lot of money over summer, which is nice since the minimum wage is a lot lower in Montana when I go back to school. I also made good connections with some of the employees and managers there, which is really nice because I have solid references. The managers I worked well with were awesome, sweet, and caring people, but I wish I had worked with them more.

What I wish was different

I wish the management had been different. I had worked there the summer before and had different management and it was a completely different experience that I loved. This time around, things were stressful, people kept quitting and fighting with each other, and I didn’t get my requested times for work, even though I was getting a lot of hours, they weren’t at the times I put down in my availability.

Advice

Keep your head up, keep quiet, and get the job done. Don’t let it all stress you out. Remember you do have a life outside of this job. You are a whole person.
