Burke Rehabilitation & Research Hospital

Summer HELP Student

May - August 2019 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

All of the staff were kind, knowledgeable, and willing to teach me. They had a lot of patience and enjoyed my curiosity.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different was the transition from this position to my next one. It could be a little more streamlined, but it wasn’t a big deal.

Advice

Ask questions! While your job is to help, it is also a learning experience. You are surrounded by people in your future field; ask as many questions as possible.

Volunteer

July - August 2019 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience on working with patients hands on and getting to see the types of patients when having certain disorders, how their personality was.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to go more times a week rather than once only.

Advice

Always be nice regardless how the patient treats you. You're trying to help the patient fully recover so give your number one focus to the patient and go in 100% into a therapy session with the goal that this patient will get better today and make it happen by the end.

Outpatient Student Intern

May - August 2018 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

- Opportunity to learn from professionals in the Physical Therapy and Nursing fields - Ability to learn skills in patient communication, scheduling/clerical duties, and working in a fast-paced environment - Paid lectures and shadowing opportunities

What I wish was different

I would've liked the opportunity to work in or observe different hospital units outside of the Outpatient Department I was assigned.

Advice

I would suggest that applicants are clear about what department or area of profession they would like to work in. There are opportunities to work in inpatient (with individual SCI, stroke, TBI, orthopedic, and pulmonary units) and outpatient departments as either a nursing or therapy student (PT, OT, or speech).
