Bear Builder

July - September 2018 • Clackamas, OR

What I liked

Super friendly work environment, and helpful managers and coworkers.

What I wish was different

More formal/official training.

Advice

Bear Builders need to be extroverted and enjoy working with people of all ages because Build-a-Bear is an experience, not a store, and every guest comes in expecting to make happy memories.

Bear Builder

October 2014 • Lafayette, LA

What I liked

I love my co-workers and I enjoy what I do. Making kids and adults have a great experience and a new friend is worth it. The company gives us a 30% discount which compared to other companies is very generous. If we're a more "permanent" employee, we can get a raise every year we work and a small plush. We also get Christmas plushes like reindeer.

What I wish was different

More hours during the summer.

Advice

The job revolves around giving an experience more than it is about a stuffed animal. Kids are generally who we focus on with the products and birthday parties, but we welcome all adults to participate in the experience too. The only issues I've ever come across, and it's very rare, have been from parents. Everyone meshes very well working here and we're like a small family. It's perhaps one of the best retail jobs out there.

June - September 2018 • Destin, FL

What I liked

I appreciated getting out of my comfort zone by the performative and fun nature of the job, which aided by ability to work with children and parents alike. My coworkers were amazing, and working with customers in tough situations helps build important skills.

What I wish was different

There really isn't anything I would change that my local store has control over! All corporate companies have their own issues, but the staff made some complicated times more enjoyable.

Advice

I would highly recommend finding a summer job such as this that challenges you. You can make money with any summer job, but to find one that not only provides for your finances but develops your abilities is very valuable.
