BTI360

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Ashburn, VA

What I liked

One of the things I appreciated the most about BTI360's internship program was how much they focus on getting to know you and developing you as a software engineer. From day one, it was apparent that everyone at the company was excited to have us, and I felt genuinely welcomed and valued. The first couple of weeks had a big emphasis on coding workshops, with various full time employees teaching us AWS, Springboot, and other useful technologies that we would go on to use in our intern project. Each of us also had two mentors that we met with weekly to get to know, ask questions, and just hang out. The internship project itself was challenging, but extremely rewarding. I got to experience what it's like to work on team, learned a lot about how coding works so much better when working together, and gained a much better understanding about what it means to be a software engineer. I couldn't have asked for a more educational and worthwhile experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have been in person! I had heard so many great things about what it's like to work at the BTI office and would have loved to have gotten to experience it, but I'm incredibly grateful that I was still able to work this internship virtually.

Advice

Be prepared to learn a lot! The workshops at the beginning of the internship are tough, but really help prepare you for the project. Also, never be afraid to ask questions. Everyone I interacted with throughout the summer was extremely knowledgeable and always willing to help.

What I liked

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this internship since it was completely remote but now that it’s over, I am blown away by how well it went. One of the core values of BTI360 is to grow each day, and that was so easy to see even as interns. The full-time employees poured into us, whether it be through teaching the coding workshops or randomly jumping into our Discord to see if any of us needed help. Each intern is also given two mentors, which serve as really good resources for asking questions or just to have fun with. After two weeks of coding workshops, the rest of the internship is dedicated to working on an intern project. Even with the workshops, it still was not easy and I was definitely pushed to learn a lot. But more than that, the intern proejct helped show me how software developing is a team sport, something BTI360 really stresses. Working to solve problems together with all the other interns, even virtually, was a ton of fun and really educational. - The people were great, I always felt welcome and the company really seeks to immerse you in their culture to help you grow as a software engineer - The intern project was really educational, helped me learn a lot of new technology and it definitely was a challenging experience - There’s a good mix of work and play (even virtually) :)

What I wish was different

I really wish it could have been in person! Meeting people online was great but I can only imagine how amazing it would've been had it been in person. But that couldn't be helped this year so I guess there's nothing I would ask to change about the experience.

Advice

I would suggest to just be ready to learn a lot. The workshops and the intern project will push you hard!

What I liked

I had the opportunity to be a part of BTI's first remote internships. I was already overjoyed to be among the lucky ones of 2020 who got an internship experience, but I was utterly blown away with how much I learned (both technical knowledge and professional developer skills) and how much I enjoyed the experience. I connected easily with my fellow team of interns and all of the BTI staff that I had an opportunity to meet. I never felt like "a gear in a machine", I felt so valued and gained so much enthusiasm about Software Engineering in general.

What I wish was different

I would have loved for the internship to be in person, but I am so grateful we were able to do it in a safe and still valuable way.

Advice

Communication is key! Programming gets too much of a rep for being a solo sport; but asking questions and working as a team/doing paired programming saves time and leads to better code.

What I liked

I learned a lot about software engineering, especially during the first few weeks when they put us through workshops on various technologies. Some of the work that we did during the summer would be used in one of the company’s projects, so it felt like our work mattered. The teammates at BTI360 were very welcoming and supportive. Each intern was paired up with a couple of mentors that we met with weekly for lunch, which helped us connect with teammates as well as learn from them. They also made sure that we had a lot of fun while we were there for the summer.

What I liked

- I loved how each teammate at BTI360 was dedicated to mentoring us and guiding us throughout our summer. Everybody was super friendly, approachable, helpful, and passionate about developing great software as well as developing mentor/mentee relationships with us. Leadership was very approachable also. - We did a lot of hands-on workshops to teach us many new technologies which we used for our main project for the summer. It was an intense first couple weeks learning everything, but I learned more than I ever thought I would in such a short period of time. - Work/life balance is great - there were fun field trips planned for us, as well as tons of free BTI360 swag.
