I learned a lot about neutrinos and nuclear physics around my project. Not only did I meet physics majors with a diverse amount of specialties and interest, it was also like a summer camp where we were working together through an internship.
What I wish was different
I wish that we were closer to a city with more things to do. I needed a car to get anywhere, and going to NYC and returning costs almost $100.
Advice
This might be a one and done kind of experience. With over 100 interns, you can find people who are open to make friends. The amount of work each person does varies, but ultimately everyone wants to have a good time. There are difficulties at Brookhaven like location and food, but these are also things you can bond with other people. A car on campus is not required, but as they say, everything on LI is a half hour drive away.

What I liked
Great atmosphere and great project, mentor was always helpful and there to answer any questions. I liked that what I was working on had a bigger scope than just myself.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been in-person, instead of virtual and that it had been longer.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions and connect with other people on the job. Networking is a great way to get more internships.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Intern
June - August 2019 • Upton, NY
What I liked
Brookhaven is a world-class research laboratory. I had access to facilities and instruction that does not exist at Wesleyan. This research experience helped me narrow in on areas of research I would like to continue pursuing in graduate school.
What I wish was different
Living on-site at Brookhaven was not ideal for various reasons. I was isolated location-wise and the kitchen and laundry situation made daily life challenging.
Advice
I would highly recommend the research experiences available at Brookhaven, but I would not recommend living on-site. If one must live on-site, a car is a necessity.

What I liked
My position as an intern in the LSAMP SciComp Skills Building Internship Program was very rewarding. The program focused on the topic of Scientific Computing which is not simply computer science, but the integration of science, computing, and mathematics. In particular, I learned the pivotal role that coding plays in the everyday role of a scientist at a National Laboratory.
What I wish was different
The program was only three weeks long, and I wish that it had been longer duration due to the amount of information we had to cover.
Advice
I would say that for anyone going into research as a career, you should have knowledge about coding!

Mechanical Engineering Intern
June - August 2017 • Upton, NY
What I liked
The staff were engaging and the facilities were out of this world. Think CERN, but in the States.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more experience going into the internship, in order to be of more use
Advice
Research where you want to take your internships. I very well could have been sent to a Department of Energy site in the desert of the Midwest and been stuck there for 10 weeks, but instead I spenty summer on Long Island, NY with talented, experienced, and scholarly mentors and peers.

Research Intern
June - August 2017 • Upton, NY
What I liked
Excellent research experience, good professional development skills
What I wish was different
A little more organization from the staff would have been nice, but it only took about a week to adjust to the program and the rules of the facility.
Advice
When applying, try to contact researchers at Brookhaven, since it will make you more likely to be picked. If you are picked, definitely go to the weekly research presentations and the seminars that happen at BNL--very worthwhile.

SULI Intern

What I liked
Brookhaven National Laboratory is amazing. They do a wide variety of science there for the Department of Energy. Long Island is also beautiful, with plenty of places to explore and New York City not too far away.
What I wish was different
As a person with disabilities, it was sometimes difficult to receive appropriate accommodations. (The application form didn't ask if any were required, so be prepared to contact OEP and explain your needs.)
