Broadmark Realty Capital Inc.

Sales and Marketing Intern

July - September 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Supportive and Collaborative Environment: One of the standout features of my internship experience was the welcoming and collaborative atmosphere at Broadmark Realty Capital. From day one, I felt like an integral part of the team, and everyone was genuinely interested in helping me learn and grow. The open-door policy and willingness of team members to answer questions and provide guidance greatly enhanced my internship. Hands-On Learning: I appreciated the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. The hands-on nature of the internship allowed me to develop practical skills in sales and marketing. I was encouraged to take on responsibilities and contribute to actual projects, which gave me a deeper understanding of the industry and its challenges. Mentorship and Professional Development: I was fortunate to work under the mentorship of experienced professionals who were not only knowledgeable but also dedicated to my growth. Regular feedback sessions and one-on-one discussions helped me identify my strengths and areas for improvement, paving the way for continuous professional development.

What I wish was different

Structured Training Program: It would have been beneficial to have a more structured and formalized training program at the beginning of the internship. While the hands-on learning was valuable, having a structured onboarding process with specific training modules could help interns grasp essential concepts more efficiently. More Cross-Departmental Exposure: Although I had exposure to various aspects of sales and marketing, having opportunities to collaborate with other departments, such as finance or operations, could have provided a more comprehensive understanding of how different functions contribute to the company's success. Clearer Project Goals and Objectives: In some instances, project goals and objectives were not clearly defined, which occasionally made it challenging to measure success. Having well-defined project scopes and expectations would have improved project management and accountability.

Advice

Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions and seek clarification whenever you're unsure about something. Colleagues and mentors are typically open to helping you learn and understand the intricacies of the industry and the company's operations. Take on Challenges: Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and volunteer for tasks or projects that might be slightly beyond your current skill level. Embracing challenges is an excellent way to accelerate your learning and demonstrate your dedication. Network Actively: Actively engage in networking opportunities within the company and industry. Building relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and professionals in your field can open doors to valuable insights, mentorship, and potential future opportunities. Set Clear Goals: Establish clear personal and professional goals for your internship.
