Research Assistant

March 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I was able to make a significant contribution to my research team.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to have better communication with my superiors. I was one of the first people on the project, and when new supervisors come on, I was doing things differently than what they wanted, but they did not tell this to me at first. I wish I had known this sooner and been able to improve and change what I was doing.

Advice

Research Assistant

May 2017 • Provo, UT

What I liked

It was interesting work that you learn lots of new things in. As a research assistant I gained a lot of experience with my field (physics) in a more engaging way than just a regular classroom settings. I got to attend a meeting of the American Physical Society and learn about the research that's going on in the 4 Corners states, interact with students and professors from other universities, and get good advice on careers in physics.

What I wish was different

Advice

My advice would be to just get started early with research. Since all physics majors have to complete a thesis, the earlier you start on it, the better. If you're planning to go to graduate school, I think that research is the best way to get prepared for what it's going to be like since you get to see the process of taking data, comparing it to your hypothesis, and then analyzing and reporting results.

Employee Support Supervisor

January 2018 - September 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Most fun work environment on BYU Campus! Weekly meetings were lively and instructional complete with snacks, supervisors NEVER micromanage but expect great work from employees, and the co-workers are the most down-to-earth people.

What I wish was different

The job was great! I left to pursue a different on-campus job for monetary reasons. If the job paid more, I definitely would have stayed.

Advice

Get involved in work projects, ask supervisors regularly what you can do to improve the office for all employees, and make friends.

Research Archaeologist

April - June 2019 • Casas Grandes, Chihuahua

What I liked

What I liked about my research/crew chief situation. I was able to gain a great deal of experience in the field of archaeology in Northern Mexico. Experience a new culture, and network with other archaeologists in that area.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been more prepared by doing more research in the area beforehand. I also wish I would have been much more fluent in Spanish before heading to Mexico.

Advice

Always reach out to professors and professors, and genuinely show interest in their research. Also, be sure to show you have the ability to contribute to their research, and you are competent in the field.
