Psychologist Research Assistant

May 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I love my research team! I really like how Dr. Smith opens the meetings up to any kind of discussion, not just the project at hand. We've talked about managing anxiety, grad school applications, and statistics, to name a few things. It's also really flexible. All questions are welcome, which I have really appreciated. It just feels so cool to be mentored in a small group!

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Set aside your research hours and make them a priority. Ask a ton of questions. Volunteer for extra work!

Audio Visual Technician

February 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Relaxed office job where I learned skills applicable to my major.

What I wish was different

Not much, it's a great summer job that wasn't too demanding while I was taking summer classes. Provided multiple different filed experiences and was enjoyable.

Advice

Sometimes difficult to get hours since your work schedule often depends on what the needs of those filming various projects are.

Custodial Worker

May - September 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I liked the social aspect of it. There are often activities that involve all employees to build friendships and create a good work environment. At the same time, you have a lot of time to think and listen to music/podcasts while working. Our managers were also amazing and allowed pretty flexible scheduling.

What I wish was different

Deep cleaning rooms was difficult when the task sheets weren't properly filled out. It would be difficult to tell what was done and what still needed doing. Also, some people's kids need to be taught how to not leave a mess. Every so often, a tenant would create a huge mess of crumbs or glitter or something, and leave it for us to find.

Advice

Get to know your fellow employees. I loved working with some of them, and we had a blast.

Research Assistant

October 2017 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Getting to work one-on-one with professors in the department changes your experience as an undergraduate. When you know and have good relationships with professors, you learn a lot more, you're more willing to ask questions beyond what will be required for the exam, and it can set you up nicely if you're interested in graduate school.

I loved travelling all summer and meeting so many new people! I also loved being able to share the Gospel with youth and helping them to come closer to Jesus Christ.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would wish was different has already changed! EFY is now turning into For Strength of Youth, where counselors are volunteers, and the program is accessible to all youth in the United States and Canada. It is going to be amazing!

Advice

Volunteer to be a For Strength of Youth Counselor! The experience is well worth your time and is so rewarding. It was the perfect job for me.

Graduate Researcher

August 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

The environment on campus is very similar to that of BYU-Idaho. Everyone I work with has been very welcoming and helpful as I learn more about what I am working on.

What I wish was different

As a physics graduate student, there were a few math classes I wish I had taken. In general, there are not too many things I would change.

Advice

If you have a deep desire to constantly learn, challenge yourself, and discover new knowledge about the things you are interested in, consider a graduate degree in research.

Custodial Worker

May 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

My supervisors were very flexible and willing to work with individual schedules. The pay was pretty good as well and it wasn't mentally or physically taxing.

What I wish was different

One of the only real downsides to this job is that you have to work early hours. However, it is still doable and you can get more pay the earlier you come in (up to a certain point).

Advice

Working at BYU Custodial is really good if you need a job that makes pretty decent pay and if you want something that works for your schedule. But remember that if you do early morning custodial you will have to be getting up VERY early, which can be exhausting if you go to bed late. So try to go to bed early!

Chemistry Research Intern

May - July 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

You might think that scooping manure all summer is aweful, but it was the best summer I've have ever had. I researched a bacteria that turns manure into natural gas which is used for energy. I had a lot of opportunities to work independently and be creative with my research. It also gave me an opportunity to be outside as well as in the lab.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a longer internship.

Advice

Sometimes the odd ball jobs or research end up being the most interesting. Don't be afraid to try something that might seem out of your comfort zone.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have given a lot more time to understanding the concepts that would have allowed me to do my job better.
