Breakthrough Providence

Teaching Fellow

What I liked

The community of fellow teachers and the close bonds I formed with the students!

What I wish was different

The schedule is extremely demanding and so it was hard to avoid burnout towards the end of the program.

Teaching Fellow & Academic Cluster Head

June - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

Breakthrough Providence is really an incredible organization. The best part of the job was having the opportunity to build well rounded lesson plans with the help of mentor teachers to teach middle school students English and Math with relation to social justice topics.

What I wish was different

Because this was my third summer working with Breakthrough Providence, I was use to the daily schedule and the time commitment needed. One area that was difficult however was learning how to use restorative practices around cell phone use in the classroom.

Advice

Enjoy the experience, because the relationships you build with your team teachers and students will impact your life greatly. The job can be stressful but remember to take time for yourself, laugh with your students, and focus on learning and teaching!

Teaching Fellow

June - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

Working with students, watching them grow, and developing my own leadership skills to be better than they had been previously.

What I wish was different

I wish the administrative team was more effective at sharing information with me when the schedule changed during the day. This often led to confusion and improvisation on my part.

Advice

Do not attempt to make a long commute with this job! The hours are long and it's an early start at 7:30. Living more than 20 minutes away will absolutely drain you!

What I liked

I enjoyed having the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of todays youth. The children I worked with were remarkable and they have forever made an impact on my life.

What I wish was different

While although there are times where we cannot prevent all situations, I feel as though there is always room for improvement when it comes to organization as well as communication.

Advice

Be patient with yourself and have confidence in yourself as well as the decisions you make as an educator.
