Breakthrough Miami

Teaching Fellow

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

One thing I enjoyed the most was the interpersonal relationships made with the department mentors and other teaching fellows.

What I wish was different

One thing that I would have changed about the experience is the payment procedures in regards to Americorps.

Advice

One quick pro-tip for being a Teaching Fellow for BTM is to maintain professionalism at all times!

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work with kids and share some of my interests with them. During a time when people were feeling socially isolated, I liked that I got to have interaction with others and really feel like part of a team.

Associate Site Director/Site coordinator

June - August 2018 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I love this organization and have been a part of it since 2012! This summer, I trained and worked alongside 16 teaching fellows, and 5 admin members to lead 160 kids to success for the upcoming school year.

What I wish was different

There are many things you can’t control-one being mindsets— although having been trained on growth mindset. It doesn’t happen overnight. But all in all, people’s experiences will have them reflect and (hopefully) better themselves from the experience.

Advice

GO WITH AN OPEN MIND when applying to be a teaching fellow or admin member! Nothing is perfect, but the most you can do is set a procedure/protocol and believe in the beauty of the unknown. Be real— phoniness is easily shut down. Be a team player with creative ideas and always be energetic!!

What I liked

This was a very hands-on and effective way to learn what it's like to be a teacher. You have some guidance and a lot of freedom.

What I wish was different

I would have appreciated more guidance at points, but the experience varies from site to site.

Advice

This is a job that requires dedication and many hours. If you're frustrated, don't give up on yourself or the students.
