Field Operations Manager

May - August 2021 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people and the city. The job allowed me to begin to use the knowledge from school in a practical setting.

What I wish was different

I didn't enjoy being away from my family. Sometimes the early morning concrete pours (2 and 3 am) were really tough to power through.

Advice

Be humble and keep your brain open to learn. The people working out there know a lot more and have a lot to pass on.

Intern

May - August 2021 • Birmingham, AL

What I liked

The atmosphere at Brasfield &Gorrie was very friendly and open. There is opportunity to do jobsite visits if your particular job isn't on the construction site. We got to do some volunteer work. Excellent opportunity to build connections. Monthly living stipend for students struggling to commute or pay rent.

What I wish was different

Not much. I had an amazing learning experience and cannot wait to go back!

Advice

I would say that if you do not have experience, you'll have ample opportunity to do learn with online courses and shadowing your managers and team. Your manager will try not to give you work that you cannot handle, but you will still be fully responsible for the work you are assigned and should not slack. When you have free time, try to learn as much as you can. There's a lot of room for growth here, and people notice your attitude and work ethic.

Construction Project Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The people and culture the company creates are the best I’ve ever experienced. The company also does a fantastic job taking care of their interns.

What I wish was different

I wish I started thinking about return offers and jobs following graduation while I was looking at internship opportunities.

Advice

Construction is about hard work. If you want to be successful, you need to be the first one there and the last one to leave.

Preconstruction Co-Op/Intern

June - August 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere of working in the office. Watching people from different departments work together to create a plan for a project was insightful to the process of preconstruction as well as each individual's role in the process. I made great relationships and learned a lot in that short amount of time.

What I wish was different

The obvious answer is I wish Covid-19 didn't exist. I feel like I was hesitant to interact more due to the constant underlying fear of contracting and spreading the virus.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The most valuable things I've learned from my summer 2020 experience come from conversations with my supervisor and other co-workers about their experiences and insights.

Construction Project Management Intern

January - August 2020 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

Great team, Great location, Great Project and Amazing experience. I would not have traded the time out there for anything else, it taught me all the knowledge I felt like I was needing to start a career in construction.

What I wish was different

Warmer temperatures! OKC can get cold in the winter but other than that went well! Honestly, it was my best internship experience and would not have changed much given the circumstances!

Advice

What I learned is that the best way to run a good site is to have a good team. Any interns or coops should take careful consideration to make sure they make friendships with the people on site.

August - December 2019 • Birmingham, AL

What I liked

The people, the responsibility I was given, the trust I was given, and the learning opportunities.

What I wish was different

Nothing at all. I love everything about Brasfield & Gorrie, the people I have had an opportunity to work with, and the opportunities it has provided for me.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, whether you think it is dumb or not you will never find something out until you ask the question. There is a good chance that not everybody is on the same page, so it is always more helpful and more beneficial to talk more about a subject or issue.

Preconstruction Co-Op

May - August 2019 • Birmingham, AL

What I liked

Over the Summer I had many opportunities to test my learning from the classroom, and I was tested in the real world. I really enjoyed working with the preconstruction team at Brasfield & Gorrie because they gave me countless opportunities and new experiences for me to learn from and grow my knowledge. Additionally I had the opportunity to tour various job sites which provided me with on site experience to see what I was working on in the office in real life.

Advice

I would highly recommend any potential interns or co op students to always ask questions. Asking questions shows your engagement in the topic and shows you are eager to learn!

The Charlotte office has a great team and a lot of different projects going on. This exposed me to many different types of construction and many different parts of the timeline of projects.
