What I liked

I've thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Brain Boost Academy. I have learned so much from working in this position and have gained experience that you really can't get anywhere else. Karyn and Jessica are amazing and I really appreciate everything that they have done for me and my fellow coworkers. I look up to them as role models and am so grateful to have had this opportunity to learn from their experiences. While working at Brain Boost Academy you get to work hands on with amazing students and watch them grow as they work through their programs. It is highly rewarding to not only watch the progress of these students but to actually play a role in their achievements. As a recent Cal Poly graduate I am so grateful to be able to take the experience I have gained at Brain Boost with me as I further my education and continue along my professional career. There is really so much to take away from this position that can be applied in so many different career paths. If you have any desire to work in psychology, education, child care, speech pathology, etc. there is a place here for you. While working at Brain Boost I was able to work with so many wonderful people all looking to pursue different and fascinating fields, allowing me to build friendships with peers I may not have otherwise had the chance to meet and learn from those with both different educational experiences from my own. Outside of the academic applications you will also experience so much personal and professional growth that will follow you in any path you may pursue. It is really an amazing opportunity and I am so fortunate to have been able to join the Brain Boost Academy team.

What I liked

I loved the learning process and getting to work with such unique and smart students and team members at BBA. Firsthand, I have watched student improvement happen by working on the amazing brain training programs we as TLC’s help them through. Getting to watch people make improvements in their behavior and overall learning is an incredibly rewarding part of working at BBA. While applying, I thought I would be doing something similar to tutoring but it is so much more than that. As a TLC, I have been trained alongside extremely bright people to learn about how to help anybody reach their full potential. I applied to BBA because I saw many similarities between being a TLC and a speech therapist, which is my career plan. Working at BBA has given me knowledge through the training program and experience by being a TLC. This knowledge and experience puts me many steps ahead in my career goals and makes me feel more confident in myself to work as a future speech pathologist. I also love the encouragement and motivation to be a committed team member here. Each person hired brings something special and is encouraged to share their talents. Upon getting hired at Brain Boost, I decided to take a gap year after graduating and continue working at BBA. In my gap year, I now get to improve my skills as a TLC and learn more about the best ways to train each unique person we work with. I am so grateful I get to have an extra year working at BBA to gain experience and build connections! Our supportive team here is just another great part of this position. Karyn, Jessica, and the whole team here are beyond supportive every step of the way. BBA was a perfect introduction to my first real job. BBA fosters a positive, healthy work environment where everyone is valued and uplifted. Open communication, respect, and honesty are highly valued at BBA. I have never worked with a more cohesive group of people who are happy to help the students and each other! I would recommend this job to anyone with a passion for learning and helping others, you will come to work excited and feel fulfilled while being here!

Advice

The training portion you do as a TLC will teach you what you need to know about neurodevelopment, processing skills, and regulation and how to apply that knowledge to work with our students’ needs. The idea of working with people who may have autism, behavioral challenges, or ADHD can seem daunting, but the training program you complete will leave you ready to help students of all needs! The whole team at BBA is also there to support everyone and offer guidance as you go through your journey at BBA, everyone is there to help!

Advice

Working at Brain Boost was hands-down the best decision I made during college. This job is a fantastic introduction to professional work. It’s rare to find a job that is requires this level of responsibility and professionalism in college, but you can feel confident that the supportive and nurturing environment at BBA will foster tremendous growth in these areas. The training process is long and very learn-by-doing based. This was scary for me at first, as I’m not always comfortable jumping right into things without feeling completely competent. By the end of my year at BBA, however, I am so much more confident in these abilities. I’ve learned so much about how to communicate with people, manage behaviors, and tailor one-on-one care to fit an individual’s needs. Before working here, I had never really had to make decisions in any of my jobs before. From my first month at BBA I was practicing this skill. I now feel very comfortable making decisions in professional settings, as I’ve learned to trust my intuition and have faith in my skills. Not only was it incredibly fulfilling to see my students improve in their ability to focus, but I also noticed that my own attention span increased a lot over the year that I worked there. I highly recommend this job to anyone looking to go into any career where they’ll work with kids or with people one-on-one. This job gave me endless content to draw upon in grad school interviews and in writing personal statements, and I’m so grateful for everything that I learned in my time there.

What I liked

My experience at BBA has been filled with so much growth and learning. I have enjoyed working with students one-on-one and providing a space for them to feel seen and heard and grow to their fullest potential. Being apart of the process that allows them to succeed and fully express themselves and seeing their progress is so fulfilling! Through the training I received here, I have learned how to take in information and apply it to each unique situation, how to be mentally flexible, how to ask the right questions, and how to communicate and work effectively with others. I have also gained so much confidence in my own abilities. Everyone at BBA is so nice and fun to work with. It is such a positive environment to work in that facilitates your growth and success for the students.

What I liked

I like being able to work one-on-one with students with highly individualized programs to help them achieve their academic and life goals. It is extremely rewarding to see all the progress they make at home, at school, and with their relationships with family, friends, and teachers. There is no other place like this where the programs are so tailored to the students and create changes in the brain within weeks. Many students who start out several years behind in their academic standing will catch up and even surpass their peers after coming to BBA.

Therapeutic Learning Coach

May 2018 - June 2019 • Arroyo Grande, CA

What I liked

If you are considering going into any health care profession, OT, PT, SLP or honestly something not healthcare related then this job is really going to set you apart from the crowd. Not only will it stand out on your application, but the skills that you will take away will undoubtedly help you in your future career. After recently being accepted to physical therapy school, I can go back and think of numerous times where my experiences at BBA have shaped me into a better future PT. At BBA, they give you the training and confidence to work one on one with a wide variety of ages and developmental disabilities. The environment and culture at BBA is fun, upbeat, and very supportive. You are surrounded my motivating and like minded staff that not only want to see your student's succeed, but encourage your own personal growth as a Therapeutic Learning Coach and onwards. Most importantly, the work at BBA is challenging, but oh so rewarding. The improvements made by my students not only changed their lives but also proved to be a meaningful experience for me, instilling a deep sense of empathy, adaptability, and passion to improve the lives of others.

What I wish was different

I started working at BBA during the summer following my Junior year and worked throughout my Senior year before graduating from Cal Poly. I honestly wish that I had found BBA earlier on in my college career, and was able to work here longer.

Advice

Challenge yourself. Open yourself to being in uncomfortable situations. You will see the personal growth at the end of it all.
