Commercial development intern

What I liked

I learned a lot throughout the internship and got to look into markets I am really interested in such as biofuels and fertilizer. It was a great experience to get to see how the business process works first hand and expand my network.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been a bit more of an explaination on the layout of the trading floor because that is where I worked and that I could’ve connected with directors a bit easier. Often times it was difficult to share ideas and research just because everyone was fairly spread out.

Advice

That perseverance and communication goes a very long way. More often than not you will encounter many setbacks but being able to stay determined through them will get recognized. You also really have to learn how to develop a constant line of communication that enables you to easily connect and present different concepts that you might come up with. This can go a long way for future endeavors and help you grow as you continue to different work.

The experience was incredible and every person that I worked with was extremely helpful, knowledgable, and kind.

What I wish was different

The company is going through a large reorganization so they hired more interns than there were full time positions available.

Advice

Ask intelligent questions and really try to learn everything that you can.

COVID forced the internship to be online instead of in person

Advice

Research refinery processes before starting. Be willing to ask questions when you get stuck-you don't need to know everything as an intern. It will save you lots of time and build good relationships

Trader Development Intern

What I liked

Learned a lot about the energy industry from very smart people that want to help you out. I got to see more than just oil trading and saw all the nitty gritty details that, in the end, goes into people being able to get gasoline at the pump. I had the opportunity to learn more about the power sector as well by talking with natural gas traders and gaining more insight into power trading. Really broadened my perspective about the energy industry as a whole.

What I wish was different

Learning curve for oil/refined products trading was extremely steep. The physical infrastructure involved in the business is immense and complex. Wish there was a better training period/method to be able to get more familiar and comfortable with the infrastructure before being assigned to my project as I had trouble getting started on my projects.

Advice

Definitely a challenging experience but you'll be able to take away a lot from it. Be sure to build a strong relationship with your own team/traders as you explore other teams. Having strong networking skills as well as being a self-starter will be critical for success at the internship. Also, be curious! You'll be able to learn a lot about something that you find interesting just through a casual conversation or coffee.

Commercial Developer Intern - Integrated Supply and Trading - Structured Products

What I liked

The culture is centered around their core values - Safety, Respect, Excellence, Courage, and One-Team. They don't just say they exhibit those values, they actually live them. They do everything they can to encourage and help their employees. The pay was awesome, the benefits were great, they offer a full-service gym with free classes, and the managers were lenient when you needed to adjust your hours. For example, you could come in earlier if you needed to leave at an earlier time that day.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have had the day after the 4th of July off so that I could have gone home to celebrate with my family rather than have to stay in Houston to make it to work the next morning.

Advice

BP cares more about who you are as a person and what you can bring to the table as an individual than they do your technical qualifications and skills.

BP does a great job of giving real problems that need to be solved to interns. The employees were happy to help and teach new concepts in the workplace and there was a positive workplace environment.

What I wish was different

It was a great experience, I wouldn’t have changed anything.

Advice

Make sure that you take initiative to reach out to coworkers. People won’t always come to you asking to help you but if you reach out they are more than willing to help you solve your problems.

Trading Development Intern

What I liked

I loved the fast pace. It was great to have meaningful, challenging projects. I had a great supervisor as well as fantastic support from the internship program directors and other employees. I was able to get involved in office culture by stepping up to organize events , which allowed me to network. I got the sense that BP is strongly committed to Diversity and Inclusion. A majority of IST's leadership team identifies as a minority group. BP also provided a lot of bonding opportunities for the interns. For example, we were in a beach volleyball league (which we won!). We also were put up in swanky apartments in the West Loop with pools, gyms, and balconies.

What I wish was different

The internship was super competitive--fewer than half of the interns got return offers. BP gave us swanky apartments in the West Loop, and I had to live with a girl who I was directly competing with. Things were tense at times, and going home to a hostile environment wasn't fun. Luckily, I won't be working with her!

Advice

Network with everyone, everywhere and often! Not only is it moral to be nice to people, but you also never know when a connection will be able to introduce you to the CEO.
