Boys Town

Summer Youth Supervisor

May - July 2021 • Boys Town, NE

What I liked

Great work schedule with opportunity to learn how to work with kids. Had to learn to communicate well with co-workers so we were on the same page.

What I wish was different

Sometimes you had to improvise in the moment.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to speak up!

Summer Youth Supervisor

May - July 2020 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I liked the interaction-focused environment and enjoyed helping kids build life skills through summer curriculum activities.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more opportunity for youth supervisor input to possibly reevaluate the process of teaching to appropriate and inappropriate behaviors.

Advice

The Boys Town model consists of lowered tolerance for any youth behavior that could be perceived as inappropriate; while also rewarding appropriate youth behaviors that demonstrate key social skills. Early on, the more you practice teaching to youth behavior according to the Boys Town model the less foreign it may become.

I loved the team I worked with, really helpful and supportive.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

Advice

Grounds Maintenance Worker

May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

The supervisors are very nice, and truly actively care about their employees. On hot days we were highly encouraged to take breaks as needed, and we were granted a generous hour lunch break everyday. It was also nice to be able to get off at 3:00 everyday, and still clock in 8 hour days.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the work we did around the boys town campus got very repetitive, but I wasn't expecting too much variety going into the job.

Advice

Come in everyday with a positive attitude and the time passes very quickly!

In-Home Family Care Intern

May - August 2019 • Sioux City, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to work with individuals that are very welcoming and fun to be around. I was able to go to clients houses and assist them in anything they needed including but not limited too, assessments, paperwork, providing transportation, and supervising visits.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to conduct the daily functions by myself, but since I am not qualified as a social workers I am unable to do that.

Advice

If you get this internship opportunity make sure to enjoy it while it lasts because you will miss seeing your co-workers every day once your internship is over.

Summer Youth Supervisor

May - August 2018 • Boys Town, NE

What I liked

Working with kids and networking with a potential future employer. I loved building rapport with the kids and getting to know all of them. It was fun to do arts and crafts with them (as I had been leading a "Hobbies and Leisure" curriculum with some other young adults).

What I wish was different

I wish that training would have prepared me for kids to act out more. I feel like I was a bit unprepared for that.

Advice

It can be a bit exhausting teaching teenagers for a few hours, but have fun with it. Be assertive and stand your ground when teaching to the kids, but make sure you're also being empathetic.
