Boy Scouts of America, Westmoreland Fayette Council #512

Camp Counselor

May - August 2021 • Somerset, PA

What I liked

I worked as the Handicraft Director at Camp Conestoga, which meant I was running the arts/crafts area of camp. I was able to incorporate new activities this year, such as the Animation Merit Badge, as well as Model Design and Building Merit Badge. Teaching these badges helped Scouts to learn more and progress their Scouting adventure, while also giving me solid experience towards my major in college (Graphic Design/Digital Media) The best part of this job was the great people I worked with and the ability to express my creativity through the things we taught.

What I wish was different

I've been working at this camp every summer for the past 6 years, and the one thing I wish was different was if I had been a director for more than just a year. This past year was the best year I've had at camp. I'd also like to say I wish the pay was a little higher, but this job is more for experience, rather than money.

Advice

In this workplace, you'll meet lots of new people who will grow to become valuable friends. Working at Conestoga is like no other job I've had and I would go back for another summer if I didn't have so much more to worry about. Sure there were bad days, like every job, but I always look back on my experiences at camp and how they helped me become the person I am now. If you are looking for jobs this summer and can't find anything, consider Camp Conestoga.
