Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Chimayo, NM

What I liked

I loved interacting with other camp staff, but especially with the scouts that came. Talking to their scout leaders was also interesting. Getting to teach scouts different skills, and watching them enjoy it, was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

Being paid more for the work that was done would have been nice, especially because it was a high stress working environment. Also if there had been more clarity on what to expect while working there, the job would have been a bit easier to handle.

Advice

Some advice I could give from having this job is to take care of yourself if you’re under high amounts of pressure. This job was rewarding, but it was also incredibly stressful. Without taking proper care of yourself, getting sleep, staying hydrated, and taking advantage of days off, it could quickly and completely drain you. So taking care of yourself is very important if you want to succeed through pressure.

What I liked

It was awesome to give back to the Scouts since it had been a big piece in my life. Many of the other staffers were happy to help and enjoyed making memories.

What I wish was different

I wish my role could have been more defined. It resulted in some misconceptions about my job.

Advice

It provided great work experience in how to manage stress, organization, and team building.

Summer Camp Volunteer

June - July 2019 • Cumming, GA

What I liked

I am involved in Scouting year round as a leader. The summer camps allow me to work with kids all over the Forsyth county area and meet other leaders in different Packs. It is a great way to network and share ideas within the Scouting community but it is also beneficial to personal networking. All Scout leaders are volunteers and have a regular job that they work. I have met people from many industries. The camps are a lot of fun and I enjoy helping the kids learn new skills. My reward is watching their faces light up when they build a tool box by themselves, or when they hit the target with an arrow for the first time.

What I wish was different

Advice

Learn the BSA rules. They are in place to keep the kids and the volunteers safe. Talk to the other leaders and to the parents. You never know who you will meet or who you will impress. The most important advice is have fun!! Lord Bayden Powell said that Scouting is a "game with a purpose". This is a leadership program for kids and the best way to lead is by example. Sing the songs, dance the dances, and participate in the skits. Show the kids that new experiences don't have to be scary.

Mountain Bike and BMX instructor

June - August 2019 • Glen Jean, WV

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with, the students we taught, and the care we were provided.

What I wish was different

I wished we were given air conditioning in the tents we slept in for the entire summer. It did teach me how fix everything with rope though.

Advice

Bring appropriate clothing and shoes!
