Boy Scouts of America

Diercter

May - June 2018 • Beaver, UT

What I liked

Being out doors, uplifting youth, creating friendships, the managers and other directors where. Great to work with

What I wish was different

Had a bit more funding for equipment, was given a little more of a brake to get things done

Advice

If you don't know much about working for the BSA learn about them before you commit

Interpreter

June - August 2018 • Northern, MN

What I liked

It was awesome to be fully immersed in my job and be living where I worked. I thought my leadership skills really blossomed and I made some unforgettable memories. The scenery up there is to die for.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done a better job of keeping in touch with people at home because I was gone for nine full weeks in the summer. I could have brought my laptop to aid in this but chose not to and ended up regretting it.

Advice

It can feel tedious since it is a little over a week, but if you pay attention during your training you will set yourself up for success the whole time you are at Northern Tier.

Assistant Program Director

June 2017 • Pipersville, PA

What I liked

Interacting in the outdoors is something that I have always loved as a kid but unfortunately growing up in New York City I don't have much access to enjoy nature. Going to this camp is literally a breath of fresh air, being able to look at the stars overnight, meeting new staff and thousands of campers and being a mentor to them is very rewarding in of itself.

What I wish was different

I wish that I lived closer to the camp because of how much i love the community and my friends I made at this camp. I love spending my summer there and can't imagine doing anything else during my time.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about my experience is that you have to keep an open mind. This experience when first told about doesn't seem to be "the best". Nobody really enjoys camping nowadays, especially in the woods of Pennsylvania for the entire summer, however the friends you make, the memories you share, it is incomparable.

Ecology and Conservation Director

June - August 2018 • Byram Township, NJ

What I liked

I've worked in this position for the past six summers, and the work schedule and overall environment is excellent. While we worked very long days, almost all of our working time was spent outdoors which is very healthy and supports a good working mentality

What I wish was different

The pay schedule can be somewhat confusing and is not consistently on time.

Advice

It takes a certain kind of person to spend two months away at a scout camp, but it is an excellent experience for anyone who is a lover of the outdoors.

Kitchen Staff

June - August 2018 • Hoback Junction, WY

What I liked

I learned how to work in a kitchen that barley functioned, and I met a lot of great people.

What I wish was different

The pay. It would be nice to have my twelve hour days counted and not just eight by default.

Advice

Remember: whatever job you have, it could always be worse. So be grateful.

Camp Cook

May - August 2018 • Springville, UT

What I liked

The most beautiful office, good coworkers.

What I wish was different

Trying to keep everything up to health code is difficult when your kitchen is a few awnings.

Advice

Learning how to get teenage boys to respect you is a valuable career and life skill, don't underestimate its value.

Summer Camp Nurse

June - August 2018 • Orange Park, FL

What I liked

I loved getting to know my campers and staff. We worked as a great team and I loved being there for people when they were injured or not feeling well at camp. I have made life long friends while working at camp.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more open communication from higher level managers. Sometimes events or tasks were unorganized due to a lack of explanations from higher administration.

Advice

I feel everyone should work at a summer camp at least one summer. You’re not going to get rich, but the friendships you make with staff, the interactions with campers and parents have made me a better person. I have worked at this same camp for 6 consecutive summers and I have been asked to return as an assistant camp director for the summer of 2019

June - August 2019 • Catskill, NY

What I liked

It was a wonderful experience getting out in nature for summer on the mountain with people I knew, and people I did not. We made an excellent team and the scouts seemed to have a really great time and learned a lot. It was a very rewarding experience, not only for the time outside, but also being able to teach about various STEM skills and watch the scouts learn.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Snohomish, WA

What I liked

Fantastic work environment; friendly people willing and able to work together and teach effectively.

What I wish was different

I was put in a Director role right away; I would've liked more time to understand the operation of the camp before I was expected to lead it.

Advice

Go into this expecting it to define your summer. You'll meet good friends and good people. Just don't think of it as a "job" - you'll be dissapointed.

Scout Master

September 2017 • Stoughton, WI

What I liked

Everything! I went through scouts and earned my Eagle scout in 2016. I'm currently on my 11th year with the Boy Scouts in total and it's great being an adult figure for the scouts.

What I wish was different

I wish I had shown up more. I worked occasionally during scout meetings and I could have done my best to take off work during these meetings.

Advice

It's totally worth being around any scouts. Knowing you can have some sort of an impact on others' lives and just doing your best to help others is great.
