Bowen Engineering Corporation

Field Engineer Intern

May - August 2022 • Charlestown, IN

What I liked

One of the things that I liked about Bowen was the hands-on learning. Interns spend lots of time in the field with engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and craftspeople. You are given real responsibilities like site layout, engineering submittal review, looking at drawings, and more. I loved the company culture and enjoyed interacting with all of the people on site- all of whom had their own unique skills and knowledge. I also like that there is a good balance between field and office work- you have opportunities to learn valuable trade related skills in addition to engineering skills.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different would be the location of the jobsite. While I enjoyed the site I was on, I wish it had been closer to campus. This would have allowed me to be closer to friends and family. The job you get put on is largely dependent on which jobs Bowen currently has.

Advice

One of the most important things I can emphasize is to give your best effort. In the construction industry in particular, hard work gets noticed. Helping out in the field with different trades is a great way to earn the respect of your crew. In addition to giving a good effort, it is always good to ask questions and learn as much about your jobsite as possible.

Field Engineering Intern

August - December 2021 • Ghent, KY

What I liked

I had a very good experience with Bowen Engineering. This was my very first work term in my career and I learned more than I could have imagined. Their program gives you first-hand experience in the construction industry by being 100% in the field. I really enjoyed being in the field as opposed to being in an office and lead me to learn so much more. They also provided me housing as well as a meal allowance since I was away from home which I also really liked. Everyone on my team was very welcoming and helpful.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish could have been different was the location. I was hoping to find an internship near my campus but wasn't able to. Bowen did make the location very manageable with provided housing and meal allowance.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to ask questions. Everyone on site from supervision to the union workers has a vast knowledge of the industry and we're always helpful if you would simply ask.
