Bowdoin College

Independant Summer Research fellow

June - August 2023 • Montpellier, Hérault

What I liked

The Summer Research fellowships are such an incredible opportunity to be able to devote time to a subject of importance / passion with the financial support of the college. These summers are not only interesting but also put you in a position to advance your research to an Independent study, and Honors thesis, or even provide material for graduate school applications / grants.

What I wish was different

Doing humanities focused research means that you need to provide yourself allot of structure! It would be great if there was a system in place for this kind of thing.

Advice

Firstly, that it is 100% worth the effort it takes to secure the grant. Secondly, start the process early, by talking to professors about your interests, seeing if they would like to work with you over the summer, etc;. Professors are their as an incredible resource, so use it!

Sociology Research Assistant

May - August 2023 • Bowdoin, ME

What I liked

I like the fact that I was able to research Brazil and the systematic racism that divides the country. The research had flexible hours as well as interesting primary sources.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to finalize the project.

Advice

The sooner students are able to reach out to faculty about research opportunities, the more time and aid will the student have.

Biology Research Intern

June - August 2022 • Bowdoin, ME

What I liked

I loved the hands-on approach to laboratory work, the agency I had in designing and conducting experiments and the way the PI ran the lab (very personal, caring and welcoming).

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had had clearer goals or aims from the beginning of the internship.

Advice

If you want to do independent research, Bowdoin summer research gives you a great foundation.

Education Intern

June - August 2021 • Brunswick, ME

What I liked

Working at the Museum of Art on campus gave me a behind the scenes look at museum life. I loved that a person within any field could come in and contribute something meaningful. The work environment was great.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity for guided discussion. I wanted to hear more about issues museums face, particularly ethical issues.

Advice

As I’ve said, everyone has something to contribute in museums. Museums are special because they are about us and our diverse lives. There’s no reason to question your abilities—you’re important here.
