Boston Magazine

Events and Marketing Intern

September - December 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

There was a lot of hands-on experience, learned how to use Outlook and Microsoft Office as well as Hootsuite and Eventbrite. There were multiple other interns I got to work with as well which was nice to have a fully supportive team to work with. It was also very fun to attend and work promotional events and help with setup and breakdown. It was also very interesting to work in an editorial setting as well as someone who has a writing background.

What I wish was different

This position should have been paid. At the time it was unpaid, and it was required to miss class to attend certain events.

Advice

It's a really great experience if you are interested in promotional event-planning/experiential marketing. You also get some good beginners' social media marketing experience as well though this internship. Everyone I worked with her is very nice and willing to teach you things so don't be afraid to ask questions. I recommend getting some event-planning experience at your college first before applying.

Editorial Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

This internship provides a great opportunity to see how a professional newsroom works and how a monthly magazine comes together as well as magazines that are published quarterly and bi-annually. As an intern, you could be involved in all parts of the process: helping a reporter research for an article, transcribing interviews, fact checking articles, and proofing page galleys. Also, you have opportunities to write for the magazines. I wrote a short article for the Fall Arts Preview in Boston magazine and an art exhibition round-up for Boston Home. Each intern is also paired with a mentor who has similar interests and can provide career advice and is another connection at the magazine. The work you do is valued by the staff and they also want you to succeed. Also, getting to know my fellow interns was a great way to make connections with people from different schools and are possible future connections.

Event Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the fast-paced, creative environment of Boston magazine. The internship also allowed me to research and write content for social media, which is a skill I was really excited to gain.

What I wish was different

There is a lot of manual labor involved with event marketing and planning, which is something I did not expect.

Advice

Do not shy away from tasks or projects that are unfamiliar.

Editorial Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Basically everything — felt like I got to do a lot of stuff, including copyediting, research, fact-checking, writing

What I wish was different

Not a lot — there was some busy work that was a little painful. Also, the lifecycle of magazine publication felt like there were varying amounts of work to do depending on what day of the month it was, so not 100% consistent

Advice

Help out whenever you can, always ask for feedback, and talk to people

What I liked

I loved the fast-paced, experiential learning environment in the office and at events. I reported to supportive, knowledgeable professionals, and was able to learn different facets of the field and network with industry leaders throughout the duration of the internship.

What I wish was different

Having a stipend would have been nice as it was an unpaid internship, however there were perks included and the experience was priceless!

Advice

Make yourself known to your higher ups, offer to do other work outside of the initial tasks provided to you, be open-minded, network with professionals in the other departments of the company.
