BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina

IT Intern

May - August 2017 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

They have regularly scheduled lunch and learns to allow the interns to know the different areas of the company and opportunities to see how the different areas interact.

What I wish was different

The population of the company is older than recent college grads so at times it is hard to integrate into a team.

Advice

You have to go out and make sure that you are known in a good way. For example always having work and doing you best job every time, going to meetings and asking questions to understand what is going on, and getting to know the team you are on (where did they start and how did they get to the position they are in now)

Market Research and Data Analytics Intern

June 2016 - January 2017 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work one-on-one with my manager, was given many opportunities to pursue my interests and to learn new skills, as well as take on new responsibilities. I was also able to work on a multitude of different projects, beyond what the job title indicated, such as new program development.

What I wish was different

Not all aspects were great, such as some of the basic reporting, or days when my boss was not there, so I was simply assigned work and told to complete it by the end of the day. Also, the location was 30 minutes (driving) outside of Columbia, which was not always convenient.

Advice

Have set goals or expectations for what you want to get out of an internship and plan to reach those
