Blue Raven Solar

Job Shadow

October 2018 • American Fork, UT

What I liked

Blue Raven is one of Utah's fastest growing companies. They get people set up with photoelectric solar panels on their homes. I was able to sit in on several departments like operations, customer service, design and take a general tour of the facility. . I think the company culture is progressive and solution oriented. It was a great experience. I'm grateful to have been invited to check them out.

Advice

For anyone who is on the fence about whether or not to take the time and do a job shadow, do it. I spent all day from 8:30 am to about 6 pm at Blue Raven. It took the day but the experience was well worth it. You don't get this kind of insight by researching on the computer. You have to get out there.

Advice

Start-ups can be hard to work for. They are usually more forward-thinking, but there really are a lot of growing pains. Be aware of what works for you and what doesn't when you go job-searching. A start-up is not the ideal work environment for everyone.

What I liked

I liked how I didn't need to move or relocate for this internship. My manager was awesome, the people are good and the company has excellent leadership. I enjoyed the work and the experience it gave me with problem solving, team coordination, effective communication, and learning to be a leader.

What I wish was different

The company is young and is growing like crazy, so we were almost constantly understaffed and often not keeping up with the influx of work. That made it difficult for us to get one on one training - it became more of a learn-as-you-go. It wasn't too difficult to work with that, but it was a little surprising.

Advice

Learn to become an independent problem solver.
