Film Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Santa Monica, CA

What I liked

Supervisors were very personable, helpful, and focused on the professional growth of interns. I learned practical and essential office production skills that could be applied to both large-scale and smaller, independent projects. I was provided with constructive feedback that not only highlighted areas in which I could improve, but also areas in which I excelled. I was treated as any other employee of the company, and was additionally encouraged to be present for meetings/phone calls to get a feel for the etiquette practiced by film producers and executives. The smaller size of the company allowed me to see firsthand how everyone collaborated and juggled various projects on a day-to-day level.

What I wish was different

Though script coverage is important and often relatively time-sensitive, this kind of work can feel repetitive at times. The company did a good job of exposing interns to other kinds of projects as well, but more frequent variations of assignments may be helpful in maintaining engagement with the work.

Advice

Definitely don't be afraid to engage with others and ask questions, even if they don't directly relate to your position. Employees are very knowledgeable and willing to provide guidance however they can.
