BIO5 Institute

Undergraduate Researcher

January 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The facilities are extremely nice. Everyone working there is very helpful and informative. There’s also a lot going on and a lot of the labs are related, so you can find a lot of help close by if need be.

What I wish was different

I have enjoyed everything I’ve done here. My lab was very flexible and rewarding and gave me a lot of hands on experience. I can’t speak for other labs.

Advice

You aren’t stuck in one place. If you like the research another’s is doing you can likely finish up your time at the one you’re at and apply for a different position within the same building.

Resident Assistant and Near Peer Mentor

June - July 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The support staff for the KEYS program was wonderful this year. When we had to deal with difficult situation, I always knew they would have my back. The students that I met through the program also gave me such a sense of fulfillment for helping them through a very trying time.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been paid by the hours I worked and not by stipend. I also wish there was more formal RA training. We are taught how to mentor, but more should be done to help with dealing with residents personal lives.

Advice

Just because a job is taxing and draining does not mean that it cannot be fulfilling and fun!

KEYS Student Assistant

February 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I like everything about this job. It is challenging at times but it is very rewarding. I enjoy challenging myself when it comes to public speaking, and meeting the students every summer and watching them learn and grow is rewarding.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

This isn't a job where you can sit at a desk doing homework. As a student assistant you are expected to coordinate events, give public presentations and handle multiple tasks at once.
