BIG BUS TOURS

Tour Guide

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

It was a flexible, fun job that allowed me to interact with all different kinds of people and tell them all about the city, and also allowed me to perform for an audience. Certainly more fun than waiting tables!

What I wish was different

They could care for the drivers a little more. Some of their busses don't have good air conditioning. It's an intense schedule - 7:30 in the morning to 7 in the evening. I didn't mind it, but to some it might be really intense.

Advice

Make sure you bring snacks and plenty of water with you at all times. Also, make sure you are able to plan your absences from work in advance; we had several people cancel out on their shifts because of auditions and such and it sorta screwed up the work day.

What I liked

Was able to learn something new everyday. Not only because it is apart of the job, but the visitors taught me something as well

What I wish was different

Scheduling or hours, but again that's apart of the job

Advice

This job can make you feel like a whole new person, especially if you're scared on public speaking. I always said to myself, "I don't see myself being a tour guide". But with active training and growing with the people who trained with me, it made me feel more confident in speaking. When you know your information all you have to do is build up the confidence to speak it.
