Big 5 Sporting Goods

Retail Salesperson

July 2020 • Eureka, CA

What I liked

Flexible schedule, always doing something, great for sporty/outdoorsy people

What I wish was different

Sometimes there is hiccups between employees and managers, often just takes being more clear and asking for things earlier rather than later.

Advice

A lot of the job is knowing a little bit about everything and being able to find that item in the store and acting like you know stuff about the item. People generally listen to your opinion about products, this can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Sales Associate

April - December 2019 • Boise, ID

What I liked

I enjoyed working to help others each day and doing all that I could to help people find exactly what they needed.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more specific about the environment I wanted to work in. Many other employees there had negative personalities, which wasn’t a very conducive environment for happy working.

Advice

I would always take the job that truly makes you want to be there every single day.

What I liked

I had good co-workers and for the most part enjoyed my job. It was a good source of income for over the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish my managers had gotten along better. There seemed to be a lot of conflict between them and that sometimes made work unpleasant.

Advice

The best thing you can do is to have a good work ethic and be honest. People really respect that and appreciate you more as a coworker.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Pinole, CA

What I liked

I liked that I was kept busy during my shifts because it made me feel productive. I also learned a lot about what it is like to work in retail so now I am more mindful of workers when I shop at stores.

What I wish was different

It would be more ideal if all workers had a stronger work ethic and avoided bringing their personal issues to the job

Advice

Be kind to everyone including all customers and coworkers. Try to keep an open mind about why others react or behave the way that they do.

Cashier

March - August 2019 • Prescott, AZ

What I liked

Flexible hours, working with people

What I wish was different

Manager picked favorites and only ever spoke to me to criticize. Other manager made fun of me and didn't appreciate my work. And other manager was impatient with customers and rude to me because I was a girl.

Advice

Don't work at that location and talk to corporate right away if something doesn't seem right.

Cashier

April - August 2018 • Rexburg, ID

What I liked

I loved the environment at Big 5. The managers really care about you and try to make work enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I do wish I could have gotten more hours.

Advice

Finding jobs in Rexburg can be hard, so my advice is to build a network of people. Talk to students about where they work and introduce yourself to multiple businesses. Use the resources the school offers to work on your resume and interview skills.

Retail Sales Associate

June - September 2018 • Milwaukie, OR

What I liked

I enjoyed being in an environment that was centered around sporting goods. I have always enjoyed sports so I was in a familiar element.

What I wish was different

At times work would move along pretty slowly and it could make the day seem to last forever, but that comes with almost any job.

Advice

One piece of advice would be to get to know fellow employees and make strong relationships with them. They are the people you see everyday so it makes the days much easier being around people you can eventually consider to be friends.

Sales

January 2018 • Carson, CA

What I liked

I like the health benefits, as well as the valuable experience at gave me on the sales floor. It also gave me the organization techniques techniques I can use to organize my own life, as well as the people skills I needed to communicate. I also lost a bit of weight from my job, as it require a lot of mobility.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything for my job to be different. I love it the way it is right now. I could use a few more hours, if needed.

Advice

Do not limit yourself as to what you can accomplish or cannot do. I came in with literally no experience and 8 months later I'm multitasking customers on the sales floor with products in the back, and I get a store discount, and intend to continue past the spring.
