What I liked about this internship was the exposure they provided for the interns. I was able to sit in on client sessions and take those case notes. I could build therapeutic relationships and that is something challenging to find in an internship.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have more time at the internship. I only did 15 hours a week and believe I would have gained a lot more if I could have dedicated more time.
Advice
Take advantage of the different kinds of clients that each therapist sees. It is nice to see different types of clients and understand varieties of individuals.

Social Work Intern
June - July 2019 • Palos Heights, IL
What I liked
This was an amazing experience to see and witness several aspects of the Adoption Agency-world. I was able to meet with adoptive parents, those just starting the process, birth moms, as well as adoptees and even trafficking victims.
What I wish was different
I do wish I would have been able to do more on the paperwork side to really see what the social workers' job entails, but due to the difficulty with background checks I was not able to.
Advice
Going to a different location was a big highlight, especially being in a bigger city. I was able to experience a lot and witness several different stories of individuals and families. Don't be afraid to try a new location, you never know what it can bring to offer you!

Foster Care Services Intern
May - August 2018 • Muskegon, MI
What I liked
I loved being in a faith-based organization that exemplified being Jesus' "hands and feet" in the world. There were great opportunities to understand how to serve populations in need.
What I wish was different
I wish there had been a more clear plan of what interns should be doing. I was able to carve a niche for myself at the organization and use my time wisely but a better plan would have been ideal.
Advice
I would advise anyone interning at Bethany to be a self-starter, motivated to make the experience a good one. Someone looking to be told what to do all the time should not intern here.

Summer Internship
May - July 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
I interned at Bethany Christian Services Saint Louis and Granite City, a non-profit organization that provides family and adoption services. I enjoyed home visits, pregnancy visits, monitoring the Safe Families for Children Program, organizing the office, and participating in office meetings and retreats. I also enjoyed packing diapers for babies and attending the Diaper Bank to help distribute diapers. I also loved going on the hotline visits and visiting the different locations of the organization. This experience helped me to decide whether or not I wanted to work with children in the future.
What I wish was different
Nothing!
