Undergraduate Researcher

May - July 2018 • Berea, KY

What I liked

I like how I worked with a team at Berea but also we collaborated with a team at the Universtiy of Kentucky and Singapore.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish that was different was the starting date. I wished we would have started a week later.

Advice

The one piece of advice that I would share, is to keep your mind open to different experience, even if it makes you uncomfortable. I almost did not take this research opportunity because it was out of my comfort zone. However, I stuck with it and I have met so many great and hard working people.

Student Manager of the Office of 1st Year Initiatives

May 2016 - August 2017 • Berea, KY

What I liked

I enjoyed developing and managing a student-led orientation Q&A session, delegating and distributing assignments to a student worker team staff of 4, training and equipping the O-Team, 50 volunteer student workers, speaking to and instructing 475 students in course planning and registration at the First-Year Assembly, being the primary point of contact for 500 incoming students via email and phone correspondence, utilizing social media to foster cohesion and friendship between members of the incoming class, and designing the 2017 Berea College Orientation t-shirts. I also enjoyed installing efficient systems to complete intricate, personalized folders for 500 incoming students, maintaining and recording equipment necessities for orientation events in Excel spreadsheets, facilitating event planning and collaboration between various on-campus departments, attending and contributing to weekly progress update meetings, and recording and processing sensitive, confidential material pertaining to students, and collaborating on a highly confidential, early alert system to detect academically at-risk students.

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing. I loved my job, loved my responsibilities, and loved the people with whom I worked. It was a great experience with ample opportunity for personal enrichment and professional development.

Advice

This job can often be overwhelming, because it requires a lot of head knowledge about the College and a balance of both soft and technical skills. However, learning the job is a continual process and I was amazed at how much I knew in just a few, short months. It was very rewarding and enriching, both personally and professionally, but it takes patience and time to get there.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Berea, KY

What I liked

The ability to do independent research along with collaborative research. We had a lot of creative freedom. I found a new way to fold a classic origami toy and I integrated them into modular, kinetic art pieces. Additionally, I loved learning about a variety of crafts from around the world and participating in a glassblowing workshop.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more time to develop my research. We had a limited amount of time overall, so we did not come to our conclusions. However, we did make great progress.

Advice

Some of the best ideas come from mistakes and trying things that may seem ridiculous. Embrace failures and trust your intuition.
