What I liked

I really enjoyed the experience I Gaines and the wonderful people I was around. Everyday was interesting and I felt like I was actually needed.

What I wish was different

I liked everything about. Traffic is just bad in the city so my commutes were very long.

What I liked

I liked being in New York City, meeting so many different students from around the country, and serving as a patient advocate for people who might not receive the same level of care in a private hospital.

What I wish was different

NYC is expensive, and I wish I had gotten paid. I also wish I got more interactions with the Psychiatric portion of the ED.

Be prepared to go out of your comfort zone!

Bellevue Project Healthcare Volunteer

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was an immersive experience, that exposed me to the social side of emergency medicine. I was able to contribute meaningfully to the function of a busy Emergency Department at a pubic hospital through volunteering and got the opportunity to observe dozens of surgical operations. There was a large variety of different healthcare settings that I got to experience through both volunteering and strictly shadowing. It is an amazing and edifying program. There were also weekly lectures that gave us a larger picture of healthcare in the US.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more opportunities for shadowing in a non-emergency department setting, such as oncology, radiology, cardiology, etc.

Advice

Go out of your way to do more than the bare minimum of the program! Volunteer your time toward extracurricular programs such as Reach Out and Read, Program for Survivors of Torture, and editing the Literary and Arts Magazine that contains written and visual art pieces from volunteers in the program.
