Bellefaire JCB

Summer Youth Counselor

May - August 2019 • University Hts, OH

What I liked

Hands-on experience in Psychology or Social Work relevant field. Great organization as a whole, friendly co-workers. Involves directly helping people.

What I wish was different

Challenging work environment, very physically and emotionally intense job. Job responsibilities and details are not clear in the job description.

Advice

Ask questions about the process and make sure you have an understanding of your responsibilities during the interview process. Approach the work with an open mind and challenge the stigma associated with mental illness. Practice active listening when possible.

Autism Youth Counselor

June 2019 • Shaker Heights, OH

What I liked

You receive a whole month of training and shadowing (that you are paid for) before you actually start. The director and supervisors of the cottage I work in are all super friendly and helpful. They are very willing to work with your schedule if you are a student, have another job, have kids, etc. It is a team-based environment and most everyone is very willing to help each other out. You are constantly learning something new and it's a very rewarding job. I've grown to be very attached to the kids and it makes me so happy to see them progress by learning new skills and becoming more independent. Everyday can be kind of unpredictable. Some moments can be quite chaotic or busy but other times you may have a lot of down time which can nice if you want to work on homework or read.

Advice

It's not a job for everyone. You need to have a LOT of patience. You also have to okay with physically restraining a client (with the help of your coworkers) in the case that they are a danger to themselves or others, but you will receive a lot of training in how to do this/how to try to prevent a crisis in the first place.
