Bechtel

Procurement and Contracts Intern

July 2020 • Reston, VA

What I liked

I appreciated that I actually had an internship this summer and that it wasn't just cancelled. I had a manager I could communicate with and ask questions to.

What I wish was different

The remote internship this summer was similar to a camp, with presentations for 5 hours a day then sometimes case studies. I just wish I would have gotten to really dive into work, an internship is supposed to give you real world experience and I think it really lacked that.

Advice

Make sure you know what you're getting into. I know this wasn't a usual experience by any means but ask about their plans for the summer to see what they are planning to improve upon.

Virtual Intern

July 2020 • Richland, WA

What I liked

I was so grateful that Bechtel chose to continue it's summer internship program even with the difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The dedication shown by the company to its interns and employees really impressed me, and made me think seriously about working for them in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have been in an in-person environment, but I understand the difficult circumstances that COVID caused.

Advice

I would encourage that students apply even though it can seem like an imposing company, with all it's success in the industry, it is still family-run and focused on fostering a collaborative and respectful environment that allows all in the company to succeed.

Project Controls Intern

June - July 2020 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed the informational benefit to the online internship. Due to not being in person and performing my actual role as a project controls intern it gave us interns lots of time to learn and grow by learning business processes, proper etiquette, networking, and involvement through the sessions we attended.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer and in person, I was remotely interning due to the coronavirus and I wish that it had been in person so I was able to actually work with and interact more naturally with coworkers and supervisors.

Advice

Go in ready and willing to learn important information about business processes and network as much as possible to ensure future success.

Mechanical Field Engineer

November 2017 • Waynesboro, GA

What I liked

I enjoy being a Mechanical Field Engineer. This summer I was allowed to assist another Intern to gain a full and enriched experience as a Mechanical Field Engineer. They had their own scope of work, was able to teach other people through the training she received, and she wants to come back to learn more.

What I wish was different

I don’t think there could have been anything different. I asked the intern how much did they want to learn. We set SMART goals that we attained.

Advice

I would advise more people to take on their intern experience with goals in mind to achieve. I encourage them to ask a lot of questions and don’t settle for a mundane experience. Being an intern in a company, that provides a full experience of what they are looking to accomplish in their career.
