Be The Match

Campus Engagement Intern

August 2022 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

This is an amazing position! I’ve gained many skills in this position thus far and sustaining connections, but above all, I get to be apart of something that is bigger than myself. I am grateful for the opportunity coming across my email when it did, because being apart of the Be The Match team has been a second-to-none experience.

blood and bone marrow donor recruiter

January - May 2020 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I liked knowing that my volunteering helped people with terminal illnesses find ethnic matches for blood and bone marrow donations.

What I wish was different

We got a presentation of what the organization did and why and we could ask questions when things were unclear but I wish we could hear from maybe a doctor or a patient how Be the Match is better or different than your generic blood drive. I would like to know how we could improve than just asking strangers for help on campus.

Advice

You will have many people turn down your request to get them on the registry. Don’t be shy to chat with people and educate people about Be the Match. I don’t like when people just hold a sign up by the tabling station and don’t do anything to welcome people to the table. You should be friendly to people and respectful of their opinions but also be confident with yourself. It’s gratifying to help others so you should enjoy taking on an unpaid position for the greater good even after getting rejected 100 times.

Business Intelligence Intern

May - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Learned a lot of coding. Had a good mentor who let me use a lot of my own ideas to solve real-world company coding and report issues. The business really cares about their mission, so it was cool to see people motivated by something other than business/economic growth.

What I wish was different

Wish there was more opportunities to job shadow or learn from in other job titles in different departments. Would have liked to see more interaction between interns.

Advice

Don't take office time for granted. If you find yourself in a slump of things to do, try growing yourself professionally by watching videos or reading articles about things that interest you. Also, be open and vocal about how you don't have much to do so you can help others with their work. This might get you into an exciting opportunity!
