Bayer

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2023 • Creve Coeur, MO

What I liked

I worked with two different teams and the people on both were amazing! Learned a lot from my summer here.

What I wish was different

There is a hiring freeze right now so there is currently no opportunity for a return offer for a new grad role. I probably would have kept searching elsewhere if I had known of this beforehand since looking for a full-time position is most important to me.

Advice

Be open-minded and learn from others!

MSAT Validation Intern

June - September 2022 • Berkeley, CA

What I liked

I loved the work environment. As a Bayer employee, I felt that my employers cared about my mental and physical health.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was more structured so that I could see different aspects of Bayer and manufacturing science.

Advice

My advice would be to definitely keep in mind which specific division the internship you are applying to is in. I think the type of work you do heavily depends on which division you work in.

Warehouse Worker for Bayer

June - September 2020 • Grinnell, IA

What I liked

It was the highest paying job I had with a lot of available hours. The job also offered me a work environment I had yet to experience, it was a warehouse job where I was trained in forklift driving—I even wore a high vis vest and a hard hat!

What I wish was different

Its hours were long and early, some weeks we worked for more than 50 hours and spent a lot of that time in the same building.

Advice

Eat breakfast—it's a long day. Pack your lunches the night before. Get to know your coworkers they will be the people you spend the majority of the summer with. If you can work overtime do it—the pay is time and a half, meaning $21/hr.

Research intern

Advice

It’s a great experience if you want to know more about the chemical side of agriculture.

Sales representative

February 2014 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Really great management team that’s patient and teaches instead of reprimands. The work is otherwise with no strings and your success is based on how you decide to do the job.

What I wish was different

I wish I worked more often and didn’t have to switch locations as often as I did

Advice

I think that going into this k felt otherwise unqualified for the position but given the work I put into becoming more familiar with the product industry and successful sales strategies I did well. So I’d say just run with what your doing and try to learn by doing

Brand Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Indianola, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture, the people there were extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make sure I was learning about the marketing department, as well as the organization as a whole. I really liked the projects I got to work on and interacting with departments all over the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten more analytical experience, most of the projects I worked on I was exposed to analytics but did not get to work with it directly.

Advice

I would suggest for someone to research the healthcare industry in general before this internship. One of the most difficult parts of the job was understanding the medical terms that were used in our marketing efforts.

Field Research Assistant

May 2019 • Nampa, ID

What I liked

My manager is great and there are a lot of different responsibilities that keep things from getting monotonous. I was given a lot of responsibility with the work I did so it felt like I was doing meaningful work.

What I wish was different

Because of the nature of the work the hours varied by week. Some weeks we were waiting for the plants to grow so we worked less hours. Other weeks everything is flowering so we work extra hours. There isn't really a fix for this though.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help or clarification on what to do. It is better to look stupid at the beginning than have to fix all of your mistakes.

Customer Logistics and Contract Admin Operations Internship

February - June 2018 • Mishawaka, IN

What I liked

The structure of my internship was to prepare me for a full time offer which would be granted after my official graduation. I was pleased that my colleagues and manager focused on helping me learn and grow from that frame of mind and challenged my abilities while also allowing me to make mistakes along the way. I'm even more happy that I now, in my full-time role, have been granted greater responsibility.

What I wish was different

In my situation, I was completing this internship while completing my senior year of school. So commuting was a necessity. I would have liked to have had a similar experience as the seasonal interns had at Bayer, living in provided housing in South Bend, however; I'm thankful for my experience and the flexibility that my manager and team showed in my transition into a full-time role.

Advice

Get involved with as many groups as you can, learn from as many people as possible, and do your best to deliver good results in your role. But don't forget to be a great team player and build relationsips with your colleagues. That's important at Bayer and it adds to the likelihood of you getting a second role there or at any company.

Materials Science Engineer Co-op

June 2018 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Co-ops/interns are treated as actual employees. I don't follow around my manager and mentor and wait for them to tell me what to do; they give me projects to work on, and I pretty much figure out what to do from there. In addition, I had the opportunity to visit manufacturing sites in Texas, Iowa, and Illinois (and more, hopefully). Also the people here are incredibly nice and great to work with.

What I wish was different

For my position, I wish I had more hands-on experience (and perhaps more travel). Although it's relevant and important to the Materials Team, my role heavily involved desk work - the other co-ops were travelling and I would see them maybe once a month. Nonetheless my manager is always open to adjusting co-ops' learning experiences, so he helped me get out of the office more frequently.

Advice

Go outside your comfort zone. I'm generally a shy person so just staying quiet didn't help me; speaking up and taking on opportunities is what gave me the most growth, professionally and personally.

Inter

May 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I felt like I was doing real work and actually contributing to the company. They also had me doing a lot of different things so I learned a lot about the entire department and gained a lot of experience and skills.

What I wish was different

I had more to do for day-to-day activities.

Advice

Make sure you understand every part of what you're doing so you don't have to ask questions later that should've been answered early on. But ask questions.
