What I liked

I loved being able to go to all the different units in the hospital to see where I want to work as a nurse when I graduate

What I wish was different

I wish we were able to practice nursing skills

Advice

Take advantage of this offer, you learn a lot about working in a hospital and the hours and what is exactly done. Also they send an offer for you to stay on until you graduate

Nurse Extern

June - August 2019 • Montgomery, AL

What I liked

Gaining experience with nurses, one on one as a nursing student. I was able to see and learn so much more than a typical clinical experience can provide and it helped me prepare for the semesters ahead of me.

What I wish was different

I think they should establish a program that allows nursing students to be more hands-on and practice nursing skills under the guidance and supervision of a licensed nurse.

Advice

It is something I would recommend every nursing student to apply for, you won't get another opportunity like it again. It can also help you determine what area you think you would like to work in.

Nurse Extern

April - July 2019 • Montgomery, AL

What I liked

I liked how much I learned and how many departments I got to see. I also liked how I could shadow one nurse the whole day and it get an idea of what the entire job of a nurse is not just the patient interaction parts. It also taught me a lot about each department requires a team effort. It was very nice to see everyone helping each other out if they had a lot going on or their patient went south requiring assistance in resuscitation or assisting in helping their other patients while their focus was diverted to the one patient.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have worked more hours. I also wish we had the opportunity to perform skills, but I understand that it wasn't feasible because I would be working under the nurse's license that I was shadowing.

Advice

You get to rank which departments you would like to go to, but don't get disappointed when you go to med- surg. If you pay attention and have a good attitude, you will actually learn a lot. The med- surg nurses are very knowledgeable and enjoy teaching just as much as every other department. I would also recommend picking departments you have never been to and aren't too sure about. I thought I was dead set on ER, but I also fell in love with CVICU.
