Audit Intern

January - August 2019 • Madison, WI

What I liked

Top two things I liked: 1) The partners and team were very supportive of my learning experience and challenged me appropriately to work on audit engagements and summer projects. 2) Flexibility on when to put in my hours during the summer. I, also, had a 4 week class and put in part time hours the whole summer. I was allowed to work from home on certain days which helped on commuting time and expense.

What I wish was different

When I started the internship, I had opted for a team that only did audit. In retrospect, I think I would have liked to at least spend some time in tax for a comparison.

Advice

Especially at the beginning, I didn't appreciate how many questions they would expect me to have. I was worried I either had too many questions or that they were not smart questions. According to the team, everyone starts out feeling that way. I wasted too much time trying to figure out things on my own instead of being efficient after 15-20 minutes. There is a balance between trying yourself and knowing when you need help.

Audit Staff

June - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

While working at Baker Tilly for the summer, it was great getting to work on rotating teams. I was constantly expanding my network of professional relationships in and throughout the firm. In addition, it was rewarding getting to do the same type of work as a new hire for the firm. You really are treated like a valuable employee, and your contributions are noticed. I also liked getting to travel to different places for work because it kept things interesting. I’m very grateful for the opportunity I had to work for Baker Tilly.

Assurance Intern

May - August 2018 • Oak Brook, IL

What I liked

Baker Tilly offers an environment of open communication, encouraging questions for interns to gain a better grasp of the accounting industry with every client engagement. There was not a point throughout the summer where I felt unsure of what to do about a certain task. Everyone was always available to answer questions and help with anything I needed.

What I wish was different

Personally, I wished there was a better communication channel to collaborate with interns from other offices in the U.S., providing more perspective on their experience. This could also offer us more ideas on how to create intern events in the future.

Advice

There is no such thing as a bad question. People at Baker Tilly are there as your resource, and they want to make sure you understand what an audit entails and the specific tasks that have been delegated to you. Ask as many questions as you need because they will always be there to support you.
