BAE Systems, Inc.

Technical Intern

January 2019 • Hudson, NH

What I liked

The project I worked on over the summer was great. I also loved the interns I worked with. BAE brings in alot of people from other schools and they have ALOT of interns over the summer, so there's lots of opportunity to socialize and meet people.

What I wish was different

Work for the first 6 months was slow. Its hard being a part time intern- they don't know what to do with you because you're not there enough to work on the pressing and important tasks.

Advice

advocate for yourself and find meaningful work. don't hope it will just fall in your lap

Technical Intern

May - August 2019 • Reston, VA

What I liked

I was able to learn a variety of things from Project Management Cloud Computing and Data Analytics. All the projects were extremely applicable in my classes

What I wish was different

Sometimes there was not enough clarity in communications about tasks to the team, but that happens in every job.

Advice

Be open to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Things that I thought were my weakness became my strengths in this project.

What I liked

The people and the work.

What I wish was different

I was sat around older workers instead of other interns as in the past. That wasn't as fun.

Technical Intern III

May 2019 • Nashua, NH

What I liked

I have constantly been learning new skills and expanding my knowledge while working here. There is also a very keen interest shown by management to get interns engaged in real projects (instead of busy work) as well as retain interns after they graduate.

What I wish was different

Although I enjoy my current role, the position I filled on my team was more meant for a Computer Science major rather than a Computer Engineering major, and not knowing that I felt ill-prepared to begin working. That being said, my team was very accepting of the learning curve I faced and ultimately I have settled into the role well, but I still wish I had known more about the position before beginning my internship.

Advice

Be prepared to do real work. BAE does not like for its interns to sit around filing papers and filling out Excel spreadsheets. Even if the work is slow for a little while (although asking for more work is always a good way to fix this), sooner or later a task will come along that your team will need you to complete.

Manufacturing Intern

April 2018 • Endicott, NY

What I liked

Chance to rotate positions. Close to school so ability to work part time during the school year. Lots of other interns to meet.

What I wish was different

More roles that were related to my major. Shallower learning curve.

Advice

Personal network really does a lot in terms of getting someone a position. My advice for younger students is to go out there and not just meet people once, but to establish a long term relationship with people. Those are the types of relationships that can help your career forward. There is no point of going to a career fair and just saying hello to people you never speak to again.
