B'nai B'rith Camp

Camp Counselor

June 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

Working as a summer camp counselor is the most fun summer job you can have. I have been working with BB Day Camp Portland for three summers and have had new experiences, responsibilities and opportunities each year. I have made amazing connections with campers and with other counselors. To this day, some of my best friends are the ones I worked with at BB Day Camp Portland. I was able to put into practice the concepts and skills I learned in my Human Development and Family Sciences education at BB Camp.

What I wish was different

This past summer (2021) was hard because we were so understaffed. While this made for even closer connections between staff, the camp would have run much smoother if there had been more counselors.

Advice

I advise looking into all the summer camps and all the positions that BB Camp provides. There are day camps throughout Oregon and an overnight camp on Devil's Lake in Lincoln City.

What I liked

The community built by this organization is amazing, I have friends all across the globe thanks to Bnai Brith and I loved my job. They gave me the opportunity to explore parts of my professional skill set that i had not previously and I felt supported in my endeavors the entire way. The experience was amazing and I would absolutely love to return again.

What I wish was different

Well to be honest the food was sub par but I hear that is not usually the case and there were some supply chain issues due to covid.

Advice

Be prepared to work hard, learn hard, and play hard. The job is a lot of effort but so worth it and amazingly fun.

Advice

I would share that the most important thing about being a summer camp counselor is to create relationships with your campers; it is the most rewarding feeling in the world to be loved, respected, and admired by the young children whose lives you are changing.

What I liked

The community was incredible, and I felt very able to be myself and to grow as a counselor and a person. I had so much fun with my fellow workers, and got to work with amazing kids every day, which made all the challenges very worthwhile.

Advice

Ask questions--don't assume you know how to do something. Entering a community for the first time is a scary experience that you will get through by asking those around you for help.
