Avodah

Recruitment Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the culture of the team, as well as the thoughtful projects my supervisor assigned to me. Everyone on Team Avodah is kind, friendly, and will reach out to you to see how you are enjoying your internship, and will care about your answer. The entire staff, including those who were not on the Recruitment team, was invested in my success, which made me feel supported and welcomed from day one of the job. My projects during the summer were also well-thought out and important. I never did busywork or work that I could not handle; my supervisor, Emily, understood what I was looking to get out of my internship and tailored my projects based on those desires. My experience felt very personal and I am proud of the work I accomplished. Avodah wants you to find your strengths at your internship and help them out through your own learning!

What I wish was different

My internship experience was remote, and I wish I could have had more informal social interaction with the staff. However, I had many one-on-one meetings with staff, which helped me connect to the team, and the biweekly all-staff meetings also helped me network and put faces to names.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions asking for context - you know less about the organization than your supervisor for a reason, and understanding the big picture of your projects will help you find meaning and enjoyment out of your work. Also, 8 times out of 10, if you have a technology question (unsure of an Excel technique, how to send a mass email, etc.), Google has your answer! It is not shameful to look something up on the Internet, and then you'll know how to do it for next time.

Development Intern

June - July 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I learned a lot about how nonprofit development teams operate. Everyone was extremely kind and welcoming, and the projects I was assigned were satisfying to me because I could see how my work was helping Avodah as a whole.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID my internship was remote - if I could wave a magic wand and get rid of COVID, that would be awesome!

Advice

Make sure to check you email frequently and keep in touch with your supervisors. Also, don't be afraid to ask for extra clarification if you're stumped - everyone is very helpful.
