Aurora University

Orientation leader

May - June 2023 • Aurora, IL

What I liked

I loved meeting new freshman who are interested in my major. I was able to tell them advice on classes, guide them through electronic resources & other resources we have on campus, help guide the parents with financial aid or any type of questions they have to support their students. I was able to tell them about the organizations we have on campus and most definitely scholarships. I loved every aspect of getting to know my peer orientation leaders as well, and being provided free meals and free housing whenever we'd work. We always have breaks and go to arcades, mini golf, or even go out to eat together to bond as a group before we help introduce freshman to the whole idea of college.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time to collaborate with the students in the beginning when introducing ourselves. It would've created more ease instead of feeling like we were rushing to get to know them.

Advice

I would say the best thing is to really take in what you're doing and have fun. You are transforming these students from highschool students to college freshmen in a matter of hours, and be empathetic too. Students are still adjusting and getting their things together because this is a new stage in life for them. Be very supportive of them so that they are comfortable!

Advice

It's okay to say you don't know and it's always welcome to ask for help. It's better to say the correct thing than take the chance of saying the wrong thing.
