URGO Research

May - July 2020 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

It was a good way to get experience doing research and to realize whether this would be the path I want to take. My mentor was really nice and I'm happy with my experience.

What I wish was different

I had to do it in the middle of a pandemic, so I wished I could go more into the lab, but this wasn't anyone fault, still was a really good experience.

Advice

I would encourage everyone to do research. Research it's not just for STEM mayors, it's for everyone, and it's the best way to learn about your field in interest.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

This is a great learning experience, especially those within STEM. I am a physics student (graduating in Spring 2020) and this research helped me explore applications of physics within a lab setting. It also encouraged me to build confidence and independence.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've researched something within the field I'm most interested, aerospace engineering, but those studies aren't offered at Augsburg. I'm hoping I can fulfill that interest in my graduate studies, where I plan to obtain a Master's (or PhD, depending on how much I enjoy research) in Aerospace Engineering & Mechanics at the U of M.

Advice

Make sure to explore your options. Each faculty member has their own research that they're conducting. It's important to find a professor who's research interests you, or develop a project that interests both you and the professor. The latter is what I did with my research advisor. We combined my interest in mechanical engineering and his interest in biophysics & food science to develop our project to build a 3D printer that prints paste materials (chocolate, for example).

What I wish was different

More communication between different departments (ie. campus life, residence life, admissions, etc.)

Advice

Be open and be yourself; let yourself be fully apart of your team. Care about what you’re doing and make sure the first-years know you care.

Orientation Leader

January - November 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

It was an incredible experience getting to connect with so many new students at Augsburg. Being present as a mentor, community member, and resource, and knowing that I was making a tangible difference in students' lives was fulfilling.

What I wish was different

The schedule was incredibly grueling, with work days during SOAR being roughly 18 hours long. It would have been nice, for the sake of both the OLs and the students, if orientation programming was broken up between more days to allow more time for rest and sleep.

Advice

Being an Orientation Leader is a tough job, with long hours and all sorts of potential variables that can cause chaos. One difficult dynamic is that OLs have to act cheerful and calm through it all. Because of this, it's very important for every OL to depend on each other. If you're an OL and you run into a difficult situation or feel drained, don't be afraid to ask your peers for help. You're all in this together.

What I wish was different

Better communication with the team and my campus and having more time to commit to projects.

Advice

Make sure you work on your self motivation and holding yourself accountable to your work.

Sociology Research Assistant

June 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I really have continued to love this experience. I have learned so much about research procedures as well as been able to tie my experiences back into the classroom.

What I wish was different

I wish could have been able to focus only on the research project during my fall semester but classes made it difficult due to time available to do the necessary work.

Advice

I would advice that if anyone wants to go after a position, apply because the worst thing that could happen is that you do not get offered a position. Do not limit yourself because of your own fear or else you will miss out on many opportunities.
