Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies

Resident Assistant

May - August 2019 • Mancelona, MI

What I liked

I loved the people I had the opportunity to work with and the friends I made and still stay in touch with this summer!

What I wish was different

It was the first time this position was offered but if I could have known more about the responsibilities before I got there.

Advice

To always take the opportunity to get to know someone better and start a relationship with them even if you may never see them again.

Research Assistant

May 2019 • Mancelona, MI

What I liked

I loved the skills I was able to learn, and the confidence I was able to gain in my abilities. I loved the team I worked on, both my team leader and coworker were amazing people, and so were the students and professors I was able to interact with around campus. It was a gorgeous location, with delicious food, good pay, great work, and awesome people. What more could you ask for?

What I wish was different

I wished I had been able to spend more time on the campus and gotten to take a class there.

Advice

I would advise future research assistants to expect and be ready for a broad range of work, from data collection to academic writing. I would also advise bringing waterproof pants for field work.

Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Mancelona, MI

What I liked

It's a friendly environment with a Christian focus. The research directors really know what they're doing and know how to teach well. It was a very professional research experience and a great resume builder. Also, the pay was good for a summer research job.

What I wish was different

There is not much to do around Mancelona and we did not have the chance to go home for weekends very much.

Advice

If you're doing a fieldwork based experience, be ready to be tired and uncomfortable. But it's also very rewarding.
